A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arsh,

How’s everything going. It’s bean a while since I saw. Fortunately, I am amazed to hear that you are coming to stay at my house. You will be here in morning but due to some work related commitments I won’t be there until evening.

After listening from you that to be here in morning. I have already given my house keys to my neighbour. So that you can take them and get in to the house and get relax until I reach there.

As far as reaching concerned, I have already booked a cab that you will get a message of details shortly in your cell phone.

Furthermore, I reach house by 6:30pm after my office. We will go out for dinner at Italian restaurant and casino afterwards, which is one of brighter places in our city.

I am excited to see you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: key arrangements, directions, and evening plans. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the explanation of the cab booking could be more detailed to ensure the reader feels fully informed. To improve, ensure you expand on your points to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response to the instructions provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'As far as... concerned' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The opening is slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors, which affects the overall coherence. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'work related commitments' and 'booked a cab'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'get relax' (should be 'relax') and 'brighter places' (which is not a standard way to describe a restaurant). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations and precise vocabulary to describe your plans and feelings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'It’s bean a while' (spelling/homophone error), 'I am amazed to hear' (inappropriate tone for a family member), and 'I reach house' (missing article). You rely mostly on simple sentence structures. To improve, work on your control of verb tenses and articles. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they are grammatically accurate.
