IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I am so excited to meet you on Saturday, but I would like to apologize for not being home. I have an important meeting with a client which I can't avoid at any cost.

But you don't have to worry, I will handle the key to our neighbour you can get it from them and make yourself home. Since the railway station is close by, You may book an uber which will cost you around 10$. I asked my friend If he can pick up, but unfortunately he is out of town.

I will be home by 6.00 pm and we could enjoy the evening together. I made a reservation in an italic restaurant. I am sure you would enjoy their food and ambience. Moreover, we could talk endless and dance together.

You can always reach out to me if you have any questions regarding the travel and stay. I am looking forward to have a wonderful time with you.

Yours lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for getting from the station to your house, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could have provided the specific address or a landmark for the neighbour's house to make the instructions more practical and realistic for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Since', to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'I asked my friend If he can pick up' is slightly unclear as it lacks an object (pick you up). Overall, the structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, and your meaning is consistently clear. You used some appropriate phrases like 'reach out to me' and 'ambience'. However, there are a few errors in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'italic restaurant' is a misuse of the word (likely meaning 'Italian'), and 'talk endless' should be 'talk endlessly'. Additionally, 'handle the key' is not the most natural collocation; 'leave the key' would be more precise. Focusing on these common collocations will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'I will handle the key to our neighbour you can get it from them' is a run-on sentence that requires a conjunction or punctuation. There are also minor errors such as 'I am looking forward to have' (should be 'to having') and '10$' (the dollar sign should precede the number). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a good attempt at using varied sentence forms throughout the letter.
