explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
I am just writing to let you know how happy i am that you are coming back ,I am really looking forward to spending time with you and my family .I just wanted to tell you that i will not be able to receive you from the railway station ,as i have an important meeting .However,i will join you by 8 pm .
As u know , the railway station is only about 1-2 km from our house . You can easily take an auto -rickshaw or a bus to reach our home .IF you let me know your arrival time ,I can also arrange transportation for you .
Also, i have left the spare key to the house in the pot near the flower pot ,so you can collect it from there . I have already prepared a meal for you and you can have some rest in the room opposite the kitchen . I hope you do not mind waiting for me . I will meet you in the evening.
I hope you have a safe journey . See you soon .
Lots of love ,
Pam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement (the pot near the flower pot), provided directions from the station, and stated your arrival time while suggesting an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and personal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information to manage their arrival. No parts of the task were omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the greeting to the logistical details and finally to the closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'As u know' to link your sentences effectively. While the paragraphing is functional, the transition between the logistical details and the closing could be slightly more fluid. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the situation.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and appropriate for an informal letter. You successfully convey your message using common, everyday language. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a lack of more precise or varied vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. For instance, phrases like 'take an auto-rickshaw' are functional but basic. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive language or idiomatic expressions that sound natural in a personal letter. Spelling is generally accurate, though the use of 'u' instead of 'you' is informal and should be avoided in formal writing contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good control of simple and compound sentences. There are some minor punctuation errors, such as inconsistent spacing before commas (e.g., 'back ,I' and 'station ,as'). Additionally, the use of 'u' is an informal abbreviation that should be avoided. While you use some complex structures, there is room for more variety in sentence length and complexity. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is never obscured by the occasional grammatical slip. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent punctuation and aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures.
