IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Ramesh,

Hello! I hope you are doing well. I am very excited to meet you on the weekend. I am writing this to share with you that due to some emergency, I won't be able to pick you up from the station on Saturday morning.

As my boss suddenly scheduled an important meeting on Saturday, I won't be home until the evening. However, I will keep the keys under the doormat in front of the door. You can use the keys to get inside. I will arrange the breakfast for you. You need not to worry about that. Just remember the third tap from the right side in the bathroom has a leakage. Do not try to use it please.

Adding to this, I have asked my friend to pick you up from the station. He will reach there at sharp 8 am before your train arrives. I have given your number to him. He will contact you and drop you at the house. If you need anything, you can ask him directly.

Furthermore, I really apologise for this but I will be back by 3-4 pm. You can watch TV or play PS5 until then. We will go and watch our favourite movie 'Mirzapur' at 6 pm. I have booked tickets already. We will have a dinner together after the movie at your favourite hotel.

I am eagerly waiting for you. Have a safe journey bro.

Yours lovingly,

Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained the arrangements for the keys, stating that they would be left 'under the doormat in front of the door'. You also gave clear directions regarding transportation, mentioning that a friend would pick Ramesh up at the station at 8 am. Furthermore, you stated when you would be home and suggested watching 'Mirzapur' and having dinner together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are fully developed and well-supported throughout the writing. The requirements of the task have been met comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression from greeting, to explaining the change of plans, to detailing the arrival arrangements, and finally proposing evening activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as transport logistics, key arrangements, and evening plans. You made effective use of cohesive devices to link your thoughts, such as 'However', 'Adding to this', and 'Furthermore'. Although a couple of transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic, cohesion is well managed overall, making the letter easy and pleasant to read from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task. Phrases such as 'scheduled an important meeting', 'eagerly waiting', and 'have a safe journey' flow naturally and fit the context well. There are some attempts at less common expressions, and while most word choices are accurate, a few minor collocation issues appear, such as writing 'at sharp 8 am' instead of 'sharp at 8 am' or 'at precisely 8 am'. Nonetheless, your spelling is accurate, and the vocabulary is fully adequate to convey your message without any communication breakdown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('due to some emergency, I won't be able to pick you up'). The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, reflecting good grammatical control. However, there is a minor error in punctuation and phrasing, such as 'You need not to worry' (should be 'You need not worry') and a slight contradiction in times given in the text ('8 am' for arrival versus returning home at '3-4 pm' after starting work). These minor slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them would elevate your writing further.
