IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Jay,

I hope you are doing well. I am really excited that you are visiting my home after long time. Since you will arrive by train in the morning and I will be at work untill the evening, I have made a few arrangements to make your arrival easier.

Firstly, I will leave a spare house keys with my neighbour, Mr Patel, who lives in the apartment next door. When you arrive, simply ring her doorbell and tell her that you are my cousin. She will give you keys and explain how to enter the house. You can relax and take rest until I return.

As for getting to my house from the train station, the easiest option is to take taxi. It should take around 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Alternatively, you can take the number 145 bus from outside the station and get off at the Sky view ranch stop, which is only 2 minute walk from my house.

I will come at home around 6 pm. After you have had some time to rest, we could have dinner at a nice restaurant neraby. If you are not too tired , we could also go for evening walk and later night we will visit downtown area, which is famous for night life.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the prompt in a natural and appropriate tone for a friendly letter. The writer clearly explains the key arrangement by leaving a spare house key with a neighbor, Mr Patel. Directions from the train station are also detailed, offering both taxi and bus options with specific stop information. Finally, the writer states when they will be home around 6 pm and suggests dinner and a walk. All parts of the task are well-developed and fully addressed, earning a solid band score for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized into well-defined paragraphs that transition smoothly from arrival arrangements to transport, and finally to evening plans. Cohesive devices are used naturally, such as 'Firstly,' 'As for getting to my house,' and 'After you have had some time to rest.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader through the text without any confusion or obtrusive transitions, maintaining clear logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a general social context, using terms like 'spare house keys,' 'apartment next door,' and 'night life.' There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'untill' (spelling), 'take rest' instead of 'take a rest,' and 'neraby' (spelling), along with missing articles ('take taxi,' 'come at home'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary used is flexible enough to communicate ideas clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Since you will arrive by train... I have made a few arrangements' and 'Alternatively, you can take the number 145 bus... which is only 2 minute walk from my house.' The majority of sentences are clear and well-controlled. Grammatical errors are minor and non-systematic, including missing articles ('take taxi') and preposition errors ('come at home' instead of 'come home'), but these errors never impede communication or strain the reader.
