IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Navpreet,

Hope this finds you in radiant health and the best of spirits. I was on my feet the entire day when I'd heard that we are going to stay togerther!

Unfortunately, I'll be having an extremely important exam in the morning at the time of your arrival at the train station. Don't worry! I have already informed my neighbour Raman who will pick you up from the there and afterwards, will provide you with the key of my appartment.

You will be excited to know that I will catch up with you in the evening and we're going to have a great evening altogether. First, we'll visit the City Square since you are fond of capturing low-light pictures at crowded places. Our next stop will be at a famous restaurant, especially known for its customer service and delicious divine food. After having the meal, lastly, I will let you drive my new bike on the road. Given all the plans, we'll be so tired that we'll directly sleep once reachedback home.

Seems like a wonderful plan. No? Can't wait to see you soon!

Yours loving

Siman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have fully covered all three bullet points required by the task instructions. First, you successfully explained the key and entry arrangements by mentioning that your neighbour Raman will pick Navpreet up and provide the key to your apartment. Second, you gave clear instructions on getting from the train station. Third, you stated when you will be home and thoughtfully suggested an evening itinerary, including visiting the City Square for photography, eating at a renowned restaurant, and driving your new bike. The tone is appropriately friendly and informal for a letter to a family member, and all ideas are well-developed and relevant. Therefore, this performance easily meets the criteria for Band 8.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your letter is logically sequenced, beginning with a warm greeting and an explanation of the delay, followed by arrival details, the evening plan, and a friendly sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different stages of your message, such as the initial arrangements in the second paragraph and the activities in the third. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Unfortunately', 'First', and 'Our next stop', guiding the reader smoothly through the text. Referencing is clear throughout, and referencing words like 'who' and 'which' connect your ideas naturally. The overall organisation supports clear and effortless progression, justifying a solid Band 7.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a wide and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to a personal letter. Phrases such as 'radiant health', 'capturing low-light pictures', and 'customer service' show an ability to use less common lexical items with good awareness of style. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'togerther' instead of 'together', 'appartment' with an extra 'p', and the awkward phrase 'delicious divine food' or 'reachedback'. Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is varied enough to ensure clear and expressive communication, which places your performance comfortably within the Band 7 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You have successfully demonstrated a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses ('who will pick you up') and conditional/participial clauses ('Given all the plans'). The majority of your sentences are grammatically accurate and fully communicative. However, there are a few minor grammatical slips and awkward tense choices, such as 'I'll be having an extremely important exam' instead of 'I will have' or 'I am having', and 'once reachedback home' instead of 'once we reach home'. Punctuation is generally handled well, and these minor errors rarely impede meaning. This strong control over a variety of structures merits a Band 7.0.
