Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear ria,
Hope you are doing splendidly. It's been a long time since we last caught up with each other. I am thrilled to know you are coming tomorrow morning.
Unfortunately, I have to go to work because my day off is cancelled due to staff shortage and i have to arrive early morning .
However, i have made arrangements for you. Just give me a call when you arrive at railway station and i will book ride to home for you. I will be leaving home keys with the lady living next door in apartment number 48. She will be there when you will arrive home.
I will be back home by 6 pm till then feel at home . I will be keeping food for you in the fridge . I have reserved a table at your favorite italian restaurant for dinner already.
Take care and stay in touch.
Lots of love
Deepika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The writer successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the arrangements for getting the keys are clearly explained by stating that the neighbor in apartment number 48 will hold them. Second, instructions on how to get from the station to the house are provided by suggesting a booked ride upon a phone call arrival. Finally, the time of arrival (6 pm) is mentioned along with a suggested evening activity of having dinner at an Italian restaurant. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly for a letter to a family member. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, fully satisfying the requirements of a Band 7 performance under Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear and logical organization throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from greetings and the explanation of absence to key arrangements and evening plans. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'till then', and referencing pronouns ('She', 'I') are used appropriately to link ideas, although paragraphing could be slightly better managed since several ideas are grouped together. Logical progression is maintained from the moment of arrival until the evening, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the narrative without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message with appropriate informal phrases like 'Hope you are doing splendidly', 'feel at home', and 'stay in touch'. The writer attempts some less common phrasing such as 'staff shortage' and 'reserved a table', though there are some slight lexical slips and missing articles, such as 'book ride to home'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to handle the communicative demands of a friendly letter with reasonable precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using concessive and conditional clauses ('Unfortunately, I have to go to work because...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical inaccuracies, particularly with capitalization of the pronoun 'i', lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences like 'however', and missing articles ('at railway station'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, but these errors do not impede communication and the core meaning remains clear throughout the response.
