Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ishpreet,

I hope you are doing well. As we talked earlier that you are coming to Chandigarh for your higher studies tommorow in the morning by train. I am not home at that time and arrive late in the evening. So, I will make some snacks for you and put in the box in the kitchen. I will give the keys of the house to my neighbours and he will give you the keys when you reach the house. Be polite with door lock sometimes it get stucked.

I have also told my one friend about you are coming in the morning he will pick you up from the railway station and drop to the house. I will send you the contact of him and get in touch with him about your arrival timmings. I will be home until 8pm and we will go to the near restaurant for our dinner and then we go to the music club and enjoy over there. As you are joining your college from next Monday and I will show you the other things as well about how to go to your college and we can also go to local transit office for your city bus pass. Hope you will enjoy all my planings and again my best wishes for your college.

Yours lovingly,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained the arrangements for the keys by stating that they will be left with neighbours, explained how your relative will get from the station by mentioning that a friend will pick them up, and provided details about when you will be home along with a suggestion to visit a restaurant and a music club in the evening. The tone is appropriately friendly and informal for a personal letter to a relative. All parts of the task are adequately addressed and extended with relevant details, demonstrating a clear understanding of the prompt requirements. Ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is fully achieved throughout the writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs with a logical overall progression from arrival arrangements to evening plans. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As we talked', 'So', and 'I have also told', though some transitions feel a bit repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the arrival details in the first paragraph and the evening plans in the second. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional shifts in phrasing make the flow slightly abrupt at times. Overall, the organisation is sufficiently clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general letter, using everyday expressions such as 'higher studies', 'snacks', 'neighbours', and 'transit office'. There are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'tommorow' instead of tomorrow, 'stucked' instead of stuck, and 'timmings' instead of timings. Additionally, expressions like 'drop to the house' and 'planings' are unnatural. However, the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey your message clearly, and the minor errors do not seriously impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As you are joining your college from next Monday and I will show you the other things...' and 'I will send you the contact of him and get in touch with him about your arrival timmings.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including 'I am not home at that time and arrive late' (tense inconsistency), 'Be polite with door lock sometimes it get stucked' (run-on sentence and missing articles), and 'my one friend about you are coming' (clunky phrasing). While these errors occur frequently, they do not prevent your meaning from getting across.
