IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dearest Cousin,

I hope you are doing well, and I assume that you are as excited as me for your visit to Karachi.

I'm writing this letter to guide you for a better experience and exposure, as this will be your first visit to Karachi, and I personally don't want it to be the last one. I eagerly want to visit you at the train station, but unfortunately, I have an unavoidable meeting with the CEO at the same time and day.

After reaching the Karachi station, I would recommend you to use cab service, which is readily available at the station, and for your convenience, they will be in a better position to guide you about the routes and fares. I hope you remember the address I told you on the call last time, but nevertheless, I'm writing here again for your ease; it's Vilas 330, Street 19, Karachi.

Once you sort out the cab part, I have another suspense readily available for you: you have to get the keys from your favorite aunt, who lives next to my house, the same aunt you used to hate as a person, so it will be a great interaction, and I would love to hear it from you once I'm back.

Once I'm back, we will go for a short hiking trip nearby, and later I have a surprise dinner planned for you as well, where we will visit one of my favorite restaurants for Japanese cuisine, and I hope you will love it too.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. Have a safe journey.

Regards,

Umer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully and effectively covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully explain the arrangements for the keys by mentioning that your cousin can collect them from your aunt living next door. You provide clear directions from the train station by recommending a cab service and reiterating your home address. Furthermore, you state when you will be back in the evening and appropriately suggest activities for that time, including a hiking trip and a surprise Japanese dinner. The tone is entirely appropriate for writing to a cousin, being warm, friendly, and engaging throughout. All ideas are well-developed and relevant, demonstrating a strong understanding of General Training task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Ideas are logically sequenced and easy to follow throughout the letter. The opening greeting sets a friendly tone, and each paragraph transitions smoothly to a new point, moving naturally from arrival logistics to key pickup and evening plans. Paragraphing is used effectively, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the station arrival, the house keys, and the evening itinerary. Cohesive devices are managed well, using appropriate connectors and referencing words such as 'After reaching', 'nevertheless', and 'Once I'm back'. While the cohesion is generally clear and natural, there is a slight repetitiveness in sentence openings ('Once I'm back...'), which keeps the score at a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, suitable for an informal letter. You use some less common and idiomatic items effectively, such as 'unavoidable meeting', 'readily available', and 'Japanese cuisine'. Word choices and collocations are generally natural, though there are minor awkward expressions, such as 'guide you for a better experience and exposure' and 'hear it from you once I'm back', which sound slightly unnatural in casual correspondence. Spelling is accurate throughout, and communication is never impeded by lexical errors. Your vocabulary choice successfully conveys both personal warmth and practical information.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional elements. There is good control of punctuation and grammatical structures overall, with frequent error-free sentences. For example, sentences like 'I eagerly want to visit you at the train station, but unfortunately, I have an unavoidable meeting...' are well-structured and grammatically sound. However, a few minor inaccuracies exist, such as 'guide you for a better experience' (instead of 'guide you to have') and 'as excited as me' (where 'as I am' would be more grammatically precise). These minor slips do not impede communication and reflect a strong command of grammar.
