IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Bryan,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I would not be at home tomorrow morning by the time you would arrive. I have something important to do in the morning but we can spend time together in the afternoon. I am very excited to see you.

I would like to share some important things with you. We have digital lock at our house. You can get access by entering the right password which is 2345. You may find lock at the enterence. Another matter is related to the transportation. You can come here by public transport or taxi. A cab can be booked online through uber while you may see bus stop outside the train station. You can choose any of them as both are safer.

I planned to visit museum near to my home in the afternoon. We will go to a famous restaurent for dinner and watch a movie at night. It would be enjoyable.

I am looking forward to see you. Please give me a call if you need any urgent assistance.

Thank you

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task instructions. You clearly explained the key arrangements by mentioning the digital lock and the password "2345". You also provided directions from the train station, offering choices between public transport, a taxi booked via Uber, or the bus stop. Furthermore, you stated that you would be home in the afternoon and suggested visiting a museum, going to a famous restaurant for dinner, and watching a movie together. The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a general letter to a family member. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas, fulfilling the requirements for a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is logically sequenced, with each paragraph addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt (the schedule, the house entry and transport, and the evening plans). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as "Another matter is related to..." and "We will go to..." are used to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitional sentences could flow more naturally. Overall, the organization supports clear progression and readability throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for a personal letter, including phrases like "public transport," "urgent assistance," and "digital lock." However, there are a few minor spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as writing "restaurent" instead of "restaurant" and "enterence" instead of "entrance." You also attempt some less common lexical items, but occasional minor errors in collocation prevent this criterion from reaching the highest bands. Communication is never impeded by these vocabulary slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as "I am writing to inform you that I would not be at home tomorrow morning by the time you would arrive." Grammatical control is generally good, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. However, there are some minor modal and tense inconsistencies, such as "would not be" and "would arrive" instead of present or future forms ("will not be," "arrive"). Punctuation is mostly accurate, and errors do not impede overall comprehension.
