Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions, though the explanation regarding keys and entry contains a contradiction. The writer first states they will be back in the morning, which conflicts with the prompt's premise that they will not be home until the evening and have made arrangements for the guest to get in. Specifically, the student mentions that their brother will pick the relative up from the train stop, but does not clearly explain how the guest will enter the house if they arrive in the morning while the host is away. However, the tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, and the other points regarding directions via the brother and evening plans (visiting the Golden Temple and having a dinner party) are adequately addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter is structured with a salutation, body paragraphs, and a sign-off, but the overall organisation lacks logical progression and clarity. Paragraph breaks are used, but the ideas within them flow awkwardly, particularly in the second paragraph where multiple distinct thoughts are crammed together without appropriate cohesive devices or clear referencing. For instance, transitioning from business purposes to train arrangements and then to evening plans feels abrupt. Furthermore, mechanical errors in punctuation and paragraph boundaries make the progression somewhat difficult to follow at times, placing this performance firmly in the Band 5 category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of vocabulary, with several noticeable errors that impact the natural flow of the writing. Examples of awkward word choice and collocation include 'happiest movement' instead of 'happiest moment', 'visiting to my house' instead of 'visiting my house', and 'train stop' instead of 'train station'. Additionally, spelling and word forms are occasionally inaccurate, such as 'q business purpose' and the lack of capitalisation in names ('Sandeep singh', 'i'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, these frequent slips restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and flawed compound sentences. There are frequent basic errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('I glad to hear'), incorrect prepositions, and missing auxiliary verbs ('i already send my younger brother'). Punctuation is also poorly managed, with run-on sentences joined by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops (e.g., '...so i will be back in the morning and see you there. May be you feel upset...'). Because these errors are frequent and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader in untangling the intended meaning, a Band 5 is appropriate.
