IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello, Mom and Dad

As I am not at home, I am writing to inform you that I have made some arrangements for you.

Before going to the meeting, I cooked some food for you. I know that Mom only eats homemade food. For entering a building, I share a password with you by text message, which is 989j7u, and you can open it by face recognition, or another option is to hand over a key to the neighbourhood, you can take it from them.

My friend XYZ will pick you up from the train station. He will be there with a white BMW car, and you can contact him by calling [redacted phone]. He will pick you up from the station around 9 am and then drop you off at home. Because they have a busy schedule, he will not stay with you until I come.

In the evening, I plan to have dinner with you at the XYZ hotel, and after that, we will go to a movie

Kind regards

chirag.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, the writer explains arrangements for keys and gaining entry by mentioning a text message password and a neighbourhood key pickup option, addressing the first point. Second, the student clearly outlines how to get from the train station to the house by arranging for a friend named XYZ in a white BMW to pick them up at 9 am, covering the second bullet point. Third, the writer specifies being home for dinner at the XYZ hotel and suggests going to a movie together afterward, effectively addressing the third bullet point. The tone is appropriate for writing to parents, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the context. Therefore, this response meets all the task achievement criteria at a high level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized and presents a clear progression of ideas from entry arrangements to station pickup and evening plans. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as pre-arrival food preparation, entry instructions, transport details, and evening activities. Cohesive devices are generally managed well, though there are some slight mechanical transitions, such as 'For entering a building' and 'Because they have a busy schedule'. Referencing is mostly clear, though the sudden shift from 'Mom and Dad' to 'he will not stay with you' introduces a slight ambiguity regarding pronouns. Overall, the information flows smoothly, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of events and instructions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'made some arrangements', 'homemade food', and 'busy schedule' are used naturally. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'For entering a building, I share a password with you' and 'hand over a key to the neighbourhood'. While communication is never impeded, the lexical range lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands, relying sometimes on basic terminology. Spelling is accurate throughout the response, and vocabulary choices successfully convey the intended meaning to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and causal clauses ('As I am not at home, I am writing to inform you...', 'Because they have a busy schedule, he will not stay...'). The majority of sentences are grammatically sound and meaningful. However, there are a few minor grammatical lapses and awkward structures, such as 'For entering a building, I share a password with you by text message, which is 989j7u, and you can open it by face recognition'. Punctuation and capitalization are generally controlled well, though the salutation lacks proper punctuation and the sign-off uses a lowercase name ('chirag'). Overall control is good, allowing the text to be read with ease.
