IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mamta,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to give you some information about the arrangements I have made for your arrival.

As you will reach there in the morning, but I will not be home until the evening, I have arranged a way for you to enter the house. I will leave a spare key with my next-door neighbour, Mrs sharma. You can collect it from her by telling her your name.

Regarding the direction, when leace the railway station, you can take an auto-rickshaw to my house. It usually takes around 15 minute to reach here. You can also use google maps to find the exact location. My address is 25 Green park, near the main market.

I will be home by 6 p.m. After your long journey, you can take some rest. In the evening, we can have dinner together at a nearby restaurant. We can also go for a walk in the local park and spend some quality time together.

I am really looking forward to seeing you. Have a safe journey.

Best wishes,

Ekta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully and effectively addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt. You successfully explained the key arrangements by stating, 'I will leave a spare key with my next-door neighbour, Mrs sharma.' You clearly provided directions from the train station using a mix of transport suggestions, and you specified when you will be home ('6 p.m.') along with well-developed, relevant suggestions for the evening, such as having dinner together and going for a walk in the local park. The tone of the letter is appropriately friendly and polite, perfectly suiting a General Training correspondence task. All required elements are thoroughly covered, with ideas well-extended and easy to follow. Therefore, this performance easily meets the requirements for a high band level in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing, where each paragraph handles a distinct purpose or bullet point. For instance, paragraph two focuses on the house keys, paragraph three on directions, and paragraph four on the evening plans. The logical progression is smooth, and you use good cohesive devices and transition signals such as 'As you will reach there', 'Regarding the direction', and 'After your long journey'. Referencing is clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow your points effortlessly. While the cohesion is generally natural, a few minor improvements in sentence linking could make the flow even more seamless, but overall the organization fully supports the communicative purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary that successfully communicates your message. Expressions like 'spare key', 'next-door neighbour', 'auto-rickshaw', and 'quality time' are well-chosen and natural for this context. However, there are a few minor lexical and capitalization slips, such as 'Mrs sharma' (capitalization error) and 'take some rest' (collocationally, 'get some rest' or simply 'rest' is more natural). Additionally, phrases like 'Regarding the direction' could be phrased more flexibly. Despite these minor limitations, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meaning without any impedance to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or causal clauses such as 'As you will reach there in the morning, but I will not be home until the evening...' and 'In the evening, we can have dinner together at a nearby restaurant.' There are several error-free sentences throughout the writing. However, a couple of grammatical errors occur, most notably in tense usage and prepositions, such as 'As you will reach there in the morning, but I will not be home' (do not use 'but' after an 'as' clause) and 'takes around 15 minute' (should be plural 'minutes'). Punctuation and sentence control are generally good, but these occasional minor errors keep the grammar score at a solid band 7.
