A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ashu,

Hope you are doing well in a pink health. I am delighted to hear you are coming on 13th October at 10 a.m. Howerver, I'm sorry that I wont'be

present that moment when you arrive in the afternoon due to an important conference meeting on same day. I have made some arrangements, so you can easily enter into the house.

Most importantly, I have left an additional key with my next-door neighbour, Mrs Jane. Her house is at the first right when you enter in the street. Just ring her doorbell and tell her that you are my cousin, then, she will give you key.

Also, for your transportation purpose from station, I have already booked a cab with number plate, DH12QR in white color.

I will be home around 7 p.m. After taking shawer, I have a plan to vist a well-known restaurant which is stone throw away from our house and enjoy a dinner with your favourite desserts. Moreover, I will share our palns and recall our nostalegic memories at late night because I have no worry to go for work as I have ready taken a week holidays. I wish we will cherish all moments togather.

I can't wait to see you.

Best wishes,

Ricky.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all bullet points required by the prompt. You explain the key arrangements by mentioning that the spare key is left with your neighbour, Mrs Jane, and provide clear directions on how to locate her house ("at the first right when you enter in the street"). You also give specific transport details about the pre-booked cab with the licence plate number "DH12QR" in white colour. Finally, you state your arrival time ("around 7 p.m.") and suggest evening activities, such as visiting a nearby restaurant and sharing memories. Your tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a letter to a family member, and your ideas are relevant throughout. To achieve a higher band, you could extend your ideas further with slightly more elaborate details or smoother transitions between the different points of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear overall arrangement with paragraphs dedicated to distinct topics, such as arrival arrangements, transport, and evening plans. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as "Most importantly," "Also," and "Moreover." However, some referencing is slightly awkward or mechanical, such as the transition "then, she will give you key," which disrupts the smooth flow of the sentences. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, guiding the reader logically from the initial greeting down to the closing remarks. To improve further, ensure that all cohesive links feel natural and that referencing pronouns point unambiguously to their intended antecedents.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general social context, using expressions like "delighted to hear," "conference meeting," and "nostalgic memories." You also attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as "stone throw away" (though idiomatically it should be "a stone's throw away") and "cherish all moments." There are a few noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as "Howerver," "wont'be," "palns," and "ready taken" instead of already taken. These minor slips do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on precision in spelling and fixed collocations will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using subordinate clauses such as "I am delighted to hear you are coming" and "due to an important conference meeting on same day." However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ("in a pink health" instead of good health, "at the first right"), punctuation errors in contractions ("wont'be"), and prepositional slips ("enter into the house" where enter is transitive). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency means that simple sentences are often more accurate than your attempts at complex structures. Practising article usage and careful proofreading of punctuation will significantly improve this area.
