explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Hello Yesha,
How have you been? I am very excited to meet you next week. The reason of my email is to provide you important information about your easy travel from railway station to my home. As at the day of your arrival time I am at my work place but I will be at home by 5 P.M.
Firstly, I will put the house keys in my mail box, which is located on the left side of the house. The mail box number is 315 and password is 25471. So you need to take the keys from there to open the lock.
Secondly, take a car ride from the railway station to the house and tell the drive to choose riverfront road to reach at my address, because that is fastest route.
I will come back from my work in the evening around 5 P.M. After that we could do gossips and watch horror movies as we both have similar genre. After that, we will do dinner in the backyard of the house.
To be honest, I am very happy to see you. I might think the information I mentioned is enough to reach at my home without any difficulty. If you want to ask me anything just let me know.
Yours truly,
Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt, which demonstrates solid task coverage and earns a higher rating. You explained how your relative can access the house by stating, 'I will put the house keys in my mail box... the mail box number is 315 and password is 25471.' You also provided directions from the station by suggesting a car ride and choosing the 'riverfront road'. Additionally, you mentioned your return time around '5 P.M.' and proposed activities for the evening, such as to 'do gossips and watch horror movies' followed by dinner in the backyard. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, meaning certain sections feel slightly brief or lack elaboration, which keeps the score at this level rather than reaching higher. For instance, the travel instructions could have included more descriptive details about landmarks to ensure complete clarity. Nevertheless, the tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, matching the expected format of a personal email to a family member.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The email has a clear, coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader logically from your greeting through the travel details and evening plans to the closing remarks. You used transitional markers such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'After that' to structure the sequence of information. However, the use of these cohesive devices is at times somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as starting consecutive sentences with 'After that'. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct topics, like the house keys and travel directions, but referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. To move towards a higher band, you should aim to connect your ideas more smoothly using a wider variety of cohesive relationships rather than relying on standard sequential connectors, ensuring that transitions between paragraphs flow more naturally without drawing attention to the structure itself.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message while attempting some less common phrases such as 'work place' and 'riverfront road'. However, there are noticeable word choice, collocation, and phrasing inaccuracies that reflect this band level. For example, writing 'The reason of my email is to provide you important information' contains an awkward prepositional choice ('reason of' instead of 'reason for') and omits an adjective modifier. Similarly, saying 'do gossips' is unnatural collocation; the standard phrasing is 'have a chat' or 'catch up'. You also wrote 'do dinner' instead of 'have dinner' or 'make dinner'. Spelling is generally accurate, but these persistent minor lexical slips and unnatural collocations prevent the vocabulary score from advancing further. Incorporating more natural everyday idioms and precise verb-noun pairings would significantly strengthen your lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to combine clauses using conjunctions like 'because' and 'which'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. For instance, in the sentence 'As at the day of your arrival time I am at my work place', the prepositional phrasing is clumsy and tense usage is slightly awkward for a future event ('I am' instead of 'I will be'). Another error appears in 'reach at my home', where 'reach' does not take the preposition 'to' or 'at'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though comma splices or missing commas occasionally disrupt sentence flow. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on increasing your control over complex sentence patterns, ensuring accurate prepositions after verbs, and refining your grasp of future tense forms when discussing scheduled upcoming events.
