explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Karan,
I am super excited to see you and waiting to spend quality time with you. Unfortunately, I am writing this letter to inform you that, I will be at work while you will arrive at the station. Although I have made all the arrangements for you.
First of all, when you will arrive at the station, try to look for the taxi driver holding a banner of your name, as I have booked an taxi for you in advance and gave all the necessary information to the driver. When you reach to home, you will see small lock box next to the main entry door, just put your birth date and month as passcode to open the lock box and get the keys to get into the house. I will make your favourite avocado toast for you and place it on the dining table.
I will arrive at 3:00 O'clock in the afternoon from the work and then I have booked tickets to attend live concerts in my city, therefore after taking dinner at newly opened restaurant in the town, we will have so much fun at the concert. Meantime, you can watch TV or play games in playstation.
Your lovingly,
Apoorv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the bullet points, but some areas are under-developed or contain inconsistencies. For instance, the writer states they will arrive at 3:00 O'clock in the afternoon from work, but the initial premise mentioned returning in the evening. Furthermore, the suggestion of what to do that evening includes taking dinner at a newly opened restaurant and attending a live concert, yet the stated arrival time of 3:00 PM contradicts the earlier timeline of only returning in the evening. While the key arrangement and travel directions are included, the overall execution reflects limited development and minor contradictions, which places this aspect of the writing at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear friendly opening and closing, and the information is divided into logical paragraphs covering the required bullet points. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'First of all' and 'Unfortunately', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, as seen when pointing the reader to the lock box next to the main entry door. However, the progression of time between the afternoon arrival and the evening activities lacks smooth logical sequencing due to the conflicting timeline details mentioned in the task fulfillment. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the message appropriately.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the writer to successfully communicate everyday arrangements. The response attempts some less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'lock box', 'avocado toast', and 'in advance', though there are occasional word choice and collocation slips, such as writing 'booked an taxi' instead of 'booked a taxi' and 'reach to home' instead of 'reach home'. Spelling and word-form errors are minor and do not impede communication, showing partial strengths of the higher band while remaining firmly rooted in the current descriptor level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of concessive clauses with 'Although' and conditional ideas. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including unnecessary commas before dependent clauses ('Unfortunately, I am writing this letter to inform you that, I will be...') and tense issues in time clauses ('when you will arrive'). However, these grammatical lapses rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are constructed accurately, and punctuation is generally manageable, meeting the expectations for a mix of structures with occasional non-impeding errors.
