explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ayesha,
I hope you are having a safe journey. I just wanted to write a quick letter to tell you that I wont be at home when you arrive.
Firstly, I want to inform you that I may not be able to pick you from the railway station as I have to visit my friend in hospital tomorrow morning.
Anyways, I made all the necessary requirements for your convenience. To help you get in, I am leaving my apartment keys with the neighbour and shared your contact details.
Additionally, I want you to take the local bus just outside railway station for the Avenue Street 11. As soon as you get off from the bus there is a small chicken shop named ''Aslam Chicken''. You can take the stairs just adjacent to it to reach the apartment on the first floor.
Anyways, dont get bored! I will be back home by evening and we can attend the local music event as planned. I already booked the tickets in advance. Moreover, Aunt Mia and Uncle Sam is going to join us for the event.
I look forward to catching up with you soon.
Kind regards,
Maqbool

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task prompt. You explain the key arrangements by mentioning that you are leaving your apartment keys with the neighbour, provide clear directions from the railway station involving the local bus and a nearby landmark, and state when you will be home alongside suggesting the evening music event. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the directions are quite detailed with the mention of ''Aslam Chicken'', while the key arrangement is slightly less elaborated. The tone is appropriately semi-formal and friendly, fitting the required format of a letter to a family member, which places this response comfortably in the target achievement range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, alongside appropriate paragraphing that separates your main points such as the train station visit, travel directions, and evening plans. You use standard cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through the text, though at times the referencing feels slightly mechanical. For example, expressions like 'Anyways' are repeated, which detracts slightly from a smoother flow. Paragraph transitions are generally logical, but sharpening the connective tissue between sentences would help elevate the cohesion of your writing to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'necessary requirements', 'adjacent', and 'in advance'. There are some minor word choice and collocation slips, such as saying 'pick you from the railway station' instead of 'pick you up' and writing 'made all the necessary requirements' instead of 'made all the necessary arrangements'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, and your spelling is generally accurate. To reach a higher standard, you could incorporate more precise, natural collocations and a wider variety of idiomatic expressions suitable for a personal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, such as 'As soon as you get off from the bus there is a small chicken shop named ''Aslam Chicken'''. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing the apostrophe in 'wont', the omission of 'up' in 'pick you', and a subject-verb agreement error with 'Aunt Mia and Uncle Sam is going', which should be 'are going'. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow your message. To improve further, ensure greater control over subject-verb agreement and complex prepositional phrases.
