IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Darshan,

I hope everything is going well for you and your family. I am writing this to let you know I am out for my business trip and I won't be able to come station and pick you up. I realise that I should have been there to pick you, but unfortunately I have to go away on business at very short notice. I have left the house key under the flower pot on right side of the main enterance.

You are new in this town so I have made some arrangement for you to reach home safe so in this case my driver will pick you from the station. He will be holding your name board in his hand so look for your name.

I will be home around 7PM evening. I have booked dinner table for us and later will join my friends at club for some more fun. Again I am sorry that I won't be able to pick you and thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,

Varshil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the keys arrangement, directions from the station, and the evening plans. However, the development of these ideas is slightly uneven. While the key location and evening plans are quite clear, the instruction regarding how to get from the train station to your house introduces a contradiction and is under-developed: you initially state you cannot come to the station, but then mention that your driver will pick them up. To reach a higher level, all bullet points need to be fully elaborated and logically consistent without presenting conflicting details about transportation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as arrival arrangements versus evening plans. However, the transitional flow between sentences can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. For instance, moving abruptly between ideas could be smoothed out with better referencing and cohesive devices. To push into higher bands, cohesive ties need to be managed more flexibly so that the relationships between sentences feel entirely natural rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message with everyday terms such as business trip, flower pot, and dinner table. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as writing enterance instead of entrance and coming station instead of coming to the station. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use a wider range of precise lexical items and idiomatic phrases with greater control, while eliminating minor spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively using structures like relative clauses and time conjunctions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing prepositions and articles (e.g., pick you up instead of pick you, booked dinner table instead of booked a dinner table, and at club instead of at the club). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout. To improve, you should focus on sharpening your control over articles, prepositions, and verb patterns to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
