IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Daniel,

How are you doing? I am currently on my way to the office as we have external auditors coming in today to audit the organisation's account. This would keep me engaged all day hence the reason i'll be home late in the evening.

I have a neighbour who works from home. Her name is Mrs Kadiri. She lives opposite my house. Her house is a one storey building. It has a brown gate and it is painted blue. There's a tiny door bell just on the left side of the building. I'll be keeping the keys with her. You just have to ring the bell twice and she'll give you with the keys.

When you arrive at the train station, Please cross over to left side of the road using the pedestrian bridge. There's a street facing the express road. Walk inside that street named Prince Charles street and take first turning by your right. Go straight down inside Diane Russell street, until you get to number 25. My house is painted Grey. It has flowers on the outside. The gate is black.

I won't be home until 8:00pm. I have prepared some vegetables that we would use to cook soup. We are also going to the supermarket to shop for some groceries. And by 10pm, we would watch a movie.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the key arrangement involving your neighbour, Mrs Kadiri, give detailed directions from the train station to your house, and state when you will be home along with evening suggestions. The ideas are extended and supported effectively, showing a clear purpose and appropriate tone for a general letter. To reach the highest bands, you could ensure that every minor detail of the plan feels slightly more cohesive and thoroughly developed, but overall, all parts of the task are well addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the initial greeting and context to key arrangements, directions, and finally evening plans. You use cohesive devices reasonably well, such as temporal markers and referencing words like "Her house" and "My house". However, cohesion can occasionally feel slightly mechanical in places, such as the consecutive short descriptive sentences about the neighbour's house. Using more advanced linking structures would help elevate the flow of your writing further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptions such as "external auditors", "pedestrian bridge", and "groceries". Communication is smooth, and your word choices are generally clear. However, there are some occasional inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as "give you with the keys" (instead of "give you the keys"). To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater precision in collocations and incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You make effective use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas well. There is a good variety of verb tenses used accurately to describe past, present, and future events, such as "I am currently on my way" and "I won't be home until 8:00pm". While punctuation and grammar are generally well controlled, some minor errors persist, such as lower-case letters for proper nouns ("Prince Charles street", "Diane Russell street") and the minor preposition slip mentioned previously. A higher band would require a greater proportion of entirely error-free complex sentences.
