IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Smith,

I am absolutely delighted and feeling chreished that you are visiting my house tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I am in deep sorrow to inform you that I will not be able to receive you at the train station due to an emergency meeting with my senior representatives.

To being with, upon stepping out from the station, you will see orange-coloured taxis, give them the address of my house and they will drop you on the correct destination.

Simultaneously, I left front door keys under the wooden table in the front porch. On other hand, there is absolutely not any kind of doubt that you will be hungry, therefore I have already prepared food for you and had placed it in the fridge. I will be coming back to my apartment 6 in the evening and we will enjoy the weekend together as I have already booked movie tickets for both of us.

I hope you will understand my situation.

Yours faithfully,

Tarspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully explaining key arrangements, travel directions, and evening plans, though some bullet points are more fully developed than others. For example, while the directions from the station and the evening plans are well covered, the explanation regarding the keys under the wooden table in the front porch is rather brief. The tone adopted is slightly inconsistent for a family member, as the formal greeting and sign-off ('Dear Mr.Smith' and 'Yours faithfully') clash somewhat with the familiar nature of hosting a relative. Nevertheless, all three required bullet points are present and clearly identifiable, providing enough relevant information to satisfy the core demands of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of ideas from arrival to the evening plans. Paragraphing is used to separate the opening, body points, and closing. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty due to awkward transitional phrases such as 'To being with' and 'On other hand', which do not flow naturally. Referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive devices are overused or used inaccurately, such as the sudden shift using 'Simultaneously' to introduce the second point about the keys, which impedes the smooth progression of ideas between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common lexical items and descriptive phrases, such as 'absolutely delighted', 'emergency meeting', and 'orange-coloured taxis'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text that reflect a mixed level of control. For instance, 'chreished' is misspelled, 'drop you on the correct destination' contains an incorrect prepositional collocation, and 'had placed' is slightly unnatural for the context. These lexical slips do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in precision and word formation at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses such as 'due to an emergency meeting' and 'as I have already booked movie tickets'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense inconsistency and article usage, such as omitting an article in 'apartment 6 in the evening' and the incorrect infinitive structure in 'To being with'. Punctuation errors also appear, such as the missing space after commas in phrases like 'other hand, there'. Despite these errors, the sentence structures remain reasonably clear, and the mistakes rarely impede the reader's overall understanding.
