Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the three main bullet points of the prompt, but the ideas are limited and under-developed, placing the response at this band level. While the writer mentions key exchange arrangements, provides basic travel directions involving a friend, and states arrival times with evening plans, the information is somewhat simplistic. For instance, the explanation about the key under the carpet is rather basic, and the suggestion for the evening is limited to having dinner. The position and purpose of the letter are clear, but the development of each point lacks depth and extension, resulting in a partial coverage of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter displays some overall organisation with a clear beginning and ending, but lacks a smooth logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is attempted to separate different topics, such as house entry and the friend picking up the relative, but the transitions between sentences can feel mechanical and abrupt. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, particularly in the way ideas are linked within paragraphs, such as the frequent use of basic conjunctions and reference words that do not always establish clear relationships between clauses.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. There is an attempt to use functional words and everyday expressions, but noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form occur throughout the text. For example, terms like 'exiting' instead of excited, 'diner' instead of dinner, and awkward collocations like 'busy on these days' or 'take the diner' cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical range appropriate for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in verb forms, tenses, prepositions, and punctuation that cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'I am really exiting to meet you', 'upon your visit our home because I already arranged', and 'he will come in time when you arrived'. These frequent errors in basic grammatical patterns and punctuation prevent the text from achieving a higher level of accuracy and control.
