IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Atul,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am glad to know that you are coming to visit my house next week. I am wrting to inform you that I would be on work at your arrival time. But I have made some arrangements for your convenience.

For your information, I will left my home for work in the early morning. As you told me that your train will arrive at station at 8:00pm. Unfortunately, due to an urget meeting, I cannot take a time off on that day. But you do not need to worry. I will hand over the keys of my house to one of my friends, who is living just beside my house. He will pass the keys to you at your arrival. As you know, my house is located a bit far from the railway station. So in order to raech at my location, you have to take bus number 56 from the bus station, which is very close to the railway station. Additionally, you can use GPS system on your mobile phone to find my location, which is more convienent way to surf new places.

I will come back from my work at 5:00 pm in the evening. Before commuting to my work, I will keep some food for you to eat in the fridge and in hot cases on my kitchen self. In the evening, we will went to the famous Indian restaurant of my city for dinner. I hope you will enjoy this journey. I am very excited to meet you after a lomg time.

Best Regards,

Neeraj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt, but the level of development varies across the task. You successfully explained the key arrangements by mentioning your neighbor, and you gave clear travel advice regarding taking bus number 56 from the station. However, the details about your schedule contain contradictions and under-developed ideas. For instance, you mention in the second paragraph that the train arrives at 8:00 pm, but later state that you will return home from work at 5:00 pm, which creates confusion about the timeline. Furthermore, the suggestion of what to do that evening lacks strong extension. To move to a higher level, ensure all parts of the task are fully developed with clear, consistent details and well-supported ideas without internal contradictions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, and the purpose of the communication is easily understood. You have used paragraphing to separate different topics, such as arrival arrangements in the second paragraph and evening plans in the third. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly faulty due to abrupt transitions between sentences and minor referencing issues. For example, cohesive devices like 'Additionally' are used, but the progression between ideas could flow more naturally. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure that cohesive links connect sentences smoothly and that referencing pronouns clearly point to their intended antecedents, creating an effortless progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'convenience', 'urgent meeting', and 'famous Indian restaurant'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'wrting' instead of writing, 'urget' instead of urgent, 'raech' instead of reach, 'convienent' instead of convenient, and 'lomg' instead of long. Additionally, phrases like 'commuting to my work' and 'hot cases on my kitchen self' are slightly unnatural in this context. These errors do not impede overall communication, but to reach the next band you need a wider control of less common vocabulary with greater accuracy in spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. However, there are some grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, and prepositions that persist throughout the letter. For instance, you write 'I would be on work at your arrival time' instead of at work, 'I will left my home' instead of leave, 'arrive at station' instead of arrive at the station, and 'we will went' instead of go. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional inaccuracies. These errors rarely impede communication, but they highlight a lack of consistent control. To achieve a higher band, you need to produce more frequent error-free sentences and demonstrate better command over verb tense consistency and grammatical patterns.
