IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Jashan,

I hope you doing well. I am writing this letter to tell you that i will be not at home on your ariving time.

I have an urgent meeting in office with my Manager so i would be at home around 9 pm and your arriving time is 6 pm so one of my friend will pickup you from railway Station and would drop you at my home. I put the main door keys under the mat which is placed on entrence. So it would be easy for you to entre in house. I already placed some snacks on a table and keep your cold coffee in fridge so once you will be here please have it.

I booked table for both of us in indian restaurnet which you like the most and will have dinner there then i purchased 2 movies ticket for film which will start at 11 pm.

See you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Harvinder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by mentioning keys, transportation, and evening plans, but the execution remains partial and underdeveloped. For example, the instruction to explain arrangements for keys and getting into the house is handled with a simple, abrupt statement about placing keys under the mat ('I put the main door keys under the mat which is placed on entrence'). Similarly, the evening suggestions are somewhat repetitive and lack extension. The format is attempted as an informal letter, but the limited development of ideas keeps the overall achievement at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the letter, moving from arrival details to home arrangements and finally evening plans, but there is no clear overall progression or smooth transitions between sentences. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, as seen with basic connectors like 'so' used repeatedly ('so one of my friend will pickup you... so it would be easy... so once you will be here'). Paragraphing is also poorly managed, with the body of the letter clumped into overly dense blocks rather than logical thematic chunks.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that create some difficulty, such as 'arriving time' instead of arrival time, 'entrence' instead of entrance, 'entre' instead of enter, 'restaurnet' instead of restaurant, and 'purchased 2 movies ticket'. While attempts are made to use descriptive words like 'urgent meeting' or 'cold coffee', the restricted range and persistent mechanical spelling mistakes prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple or coordinate sentences joined by 'and' or 'so'. Attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as the missing auxiliary verb in 'I hope you doing well' and 'i will be not at home'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, including 'one of my friend will pickup you', 'drop you at my home', and 'I booked table'. These frequent inaccuracies require reader effort to parse, fitting the descriptor for this level precisely.
