IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Charles,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to you to inform you that due to some emergency in my office, I won't be home until the evening on the day of your arrival, however I have made all the necessary arrangements for you, so there is nothing for you to worry about.

I will leave the keys of the house with my neighbour, Mr Henry. He lives next door to me. You must remember him, as he also invited us on dinner during your previous visit to my house. I had already informed him about your arrival and shared your phone number with him. He'll stay in touch with you on the day of your arrival and will be waiting outside of the house to receive you.

Furthermore, I've pre-booked an uber for you from the train station to my house. I will share a copy of it with you along with this letter. It has all the details about the car and the driver so you can contact the driver before your arrival.

I can't wait to see you. I had also bought the tickets for your favourite singer's, Salena Gomez concert at the westfield. I wanted to keep it a surprise for you but couldn't resist telling you. Therefore, in the evening of the day of your arrival, we'll attend the concert together.

Take care and see you soon.

Many thanks,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all requirements of the task. You clearly explain the key arrangements by mentioning your neighbour, Mr Henry, who will hold the spare keys and meet Charles. You also give explicit directions regarding the pre-booked Uber from the train station to your house. Finally, you state your evening arrival time and suggest attending the Selena Gomez concert together. The purpose of the letter is transparent and sustained throughout. To move towards the highest band level, the integration of details could be slightly more polished, ensuring every minor point feels seamlessly woven into the narrative without any slight tendency to over-generalise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate distinct ideas, such as the key arrangements, the transport details, and the evening plans. Cohesive devices are employed flexibly, with phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' serving to connect your thoughts smoothly. Referencing is handled well, as seen in 'He lives next door to me' and 'It has all the details'. To achieve an even higher level, you could ensure that transitional phrases feel entirely natural and unobtrusive, avoiding any slight mechanical feel in how paragraphs link together.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common items and phrasal structures like 'pre-booked an uber', 'emergency in my office', and 'couldn't resist telling you'. There are occasional lapses in style and word choice, such as writing 'on dinner' instead of 'to dinner', and spelling 'Selena' as 'Salena'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and appropriately for a semi-formal context. Expanding your repertoire of sophisticated collocations and ensuring absolute spelling accuracy will help lift your lexical score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

You display a good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms. Frequent error-free sentences are evident, such as 'You must remember him, as he also invited us on dinner during your previous visit' and 'I can't wait to see you.' However, a few minor slip-ups persist, such as the run-on comma splice in '...arrival, however I have made...' and the tense inconsistency in 'I had already informed him' where the simple past 'I already informed him' or present perfect 'I have already informed him' would be more appropriate. Maintaining tighter control over punctuation and tense agreement will secure even greater grammatical precision.
