explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house

Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Salma,
I hope you are doing well. I was delighted to hear the news that you would be staying with me for a week. It's been a long time since we met. We have a lot to catch up.
In the letter, you told me that you will be ariving in the morning. I feel sorry to tell you that unfortunately, because of an urgent business meeting I would not be home until the evening. However, I have made sure to make you feel comfortable at home when you arrive. On the top right corner of the main gate, there is a wooden pot. You will find the house key in it. I have also made you your favrouite breakfast. All you have to do is microwave it and enjoy.
Luckily, my house is just at fifteen minutes drive from the train station. On the right side of train station, you could find the metro station and catch a bus number four. In no time, you will be at the front door.
After having breakfast, I suggest you should have some rest. I will be arriving home around 8'clock and take you to this famous italian restaurant that opened recently. You will love the food and the ambiance. After dinner, we will go for shopping as you might need winter coat to survive extreme cold of the city.
I cannot wait for us to have fun like we used to when we were little.
Have a safe journey.
Kind regards,
Nirma Shaheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully address all parts of the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You clearly explain the key arrangements by mentioning the wooden pot on the top right corner of the main gate, provide precise travel directions from the train station using the metro and bus number four, and specify your evening arrival time alongside suggesting dinner at a local Italian restaurant and shopping. Your ideas are well-extended and supported with natural, realistic details. To achieve a higher level, you could have elaborated slightly more on the alternative backup plan in case she arrived much earlier than expected, though the current coverage is fully adequate for a well-rounded response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, transitioning smoothly from welcoming greetings and key arrangements to travel directions and evening plans. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However', 'Luckily', and 'After having breakfast', which guide the reader naturally through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics. To push further into higher bands, you could ensure that referencing and transitions between sentences are even more seamlessly integrated, avoiding slightly abrupt shifts like transitioning directly from breakfast instructions to transit details.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional phrases like 'urgent business meeting', 'ambiance', and 'survive extreme cold'. You attempt some less common items and show a clear awareness of informal letter style. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, such as 'ariving' instead of 'arriving', 'favrouite' instead of 'favourite', and stating that the house is 'at fifteen minutes drive' rather than 'a fifteen-minute drive'. Additionally, writing 'italian' instead of 'Italian' represents a minor slip. These minor lexical inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary score from being higher.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, producing frequent error-free sentences such as 'I hope you are doing well' and 'All you have to do is microwave it and enjoy.' Your control of tense and sentence structure is generally strong, particularly when discussing future arrangements and past habits. However, a few grammatical errors persist, such as 'because of an urgent business meeting I would not be home' (where 'will not' or 'would not be' requires careful tense consistency), missing articles like 'take you to this famous italian restaurant' (which should be 'a famous'), and minor punctuation issues such as '8'clock'. These infrequent slips keep your grammar profile solid and clear.
