Overall Band Score: 6.5 · IELTS General Essentials · 2026-10-05

IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

By the time you arrive to the town, I won't be able to pick you up and I will make arrangements for you to get to my home easily.

When you head out of the train station, look for the west exit that would be on your left side. Ensure you get on the Bus 13, that will take you directly the bus stop 13F that is nearest to my home.

Upon exiting the bus, you will be facing Ezdan compounds, head to the building EX09, and use elevators to reach floor 5. Once you reach there, take a right and look for 3rd door, that should be labeled 503. Reach for keys under the door mat and use it to head inside.

Once inside, take a shower and have some rest, I will be back by 5pm. When I get home we will go the Ezdan Mall as we planned and have dinner at the AB steakhouse adjacent to it. Let me know if you have anything else in mind so we can adjust accordingly. Looking forward to meeting you soon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the prompt, ensuring the reader knows how to get the keys, how to travel from the train station, and what the evening plans are. For example, you clearly explained the public transport route ('get on the Bus 13') and provided precise details about the evening ('go the Ezdan Mall as we planned'). However, while all three bullet points are covered, some aspects remain slightly straightforward or direct rather than fully expanded with extended functional elaboration. To reach higher bands, you could add more natural social pleasantries or develop the contextual background further, but your coverage of the required points remains clear and appropriate throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from logistical arrangements at the start to step-by-step station directions, and finally to evening plans and a warm sign-off. You use cohesive devices and sequential transitions appropriately, such as 'When you head out', 'Upon exiting the bus', and 'Once inside', which guide the reader effortlessly through the steps. While referencing and paragraphing are managed well, the transitions remain relatively straightforward, fitting a coherent overall arrangement that presents ideas in a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying specific instructions regarding locations and directions with terms like 'compounds', 'adjacent', and 'compounds'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as writing 'arrive to the town' instead of 'arrive in town', or omitting a preposition in 'go the Ezdan Mall'. Additionally, attempting slightly less common vocabulary results in minor slips, but these do not impede communication, and your overall range remains functional enough to handle the everyday transactional nature of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'By the time you arrive... I won't be able to' and 'look for the west exit that would be on your left side'. There are some errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('Ensure you get on the Bus 13' instead of 'Bus 13', or 'look for 3rd door' instead of 'the 3rd door'), and slight prepositional awkwardness like 'Reach for keys'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and your sentence structures remain generally clear and communicative.
