IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rohan,

I am so excited to host you at my place here in Dubai. Keeping a note of your train arrival time at morning 8 AM tomorrow, I have made all the necessary arrangements for you to avoid any inconvience.

As you are aware of my work schedule, I won't be available at the home in morning for recieve you from the train station. For that I am very sorry!. To keep everything smooth, I have kept the spare house keys under the mat of the front door. You can get inside and feel comfortable. You can eat snacks from the pantry or order food online.

For your transportation from train station to my residence. I have pre-booked a cab from Uber. The driver will pick you up from Exit no. 02, right next to your plaform of arrival. I will share his contact details with you, so, you can reach him out once you arrive.

After work, I will be home by evening around 6 PM. I suggest we should go to the tibetain kitchen next street for dinner. I know how much you love tibetain food. Later we can watch a movie at home and relax together.

I can't wait to meet you! See you soon.

Love,

Aakansha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points clearly: the spare key is under the doormat, a pre-booked Uber is arranged from the station, and you give an approximate arrival time and suggest dinner followed by a film. The personal details, such as remembering Rohan’s love of Tibetan food, make the letter relevant and warm. The arrangements are specific enough to be useful, although the route from the station is mostly delegated to the driver rather than explained directly, and the key instruction could include a little more practical detail. This is a strong, complete response; developing those logistics slightly further would make the information even more fully supported and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: greeting and arrival context, access to the house, transport, then evening plans and a friendly closing. Each paragraph has a distinct purpose, so the reader can locate the practical information easily. Linking phrases such as “For that” and “After work” help signal the progression, while the tone remains consistent with a personal letter. Some transitions are a little mechanical, and the opening sentence carries several details at once. You could make the flow more natural by linking the arrival time directly to the key and taxi arrangements, and by using a wider range of unobtrusive connections rather than relying on explicit transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a friendly letter, including practical expressions such as “spare house keys,” “pre-booked a cab,” and “contact details,” alongside personal language such as “I can’t wait to meet you.” These choices make the message clear and appropriately warm. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “Keeping a note of your train arrival time at morning” and “reach him out” do not sound natural. There are also spelling errors in “inconvience,” “plaform,” and “tibetain.” Greater accuracy with common collocations and careful proofreading would make your vocabulary more fluent and precise, while preserving the friendly tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “As you are aware of my work schedule, I won’t be available…” and “I suggest we should go…”. The message remains understandable throughout, and several sentences are controlled well. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in articles, prepositions, and sentence construction: “at morning 8 AM” should be “at 8 AM in the morning,” while “in morning” needs an article. “For your transportation from train station to my residence” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and “I suggest we should go” is better expressed as “I suggest we go.” More consistent control of these patterns and punctuation would strengthen accuracy.
