IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Kanu,

how are you? i am really excited to having you stay with me. since you´re arriving in the morning while i¨be at wwork. i have made a few plans to make things easier for you.

i have left my keys with my neighbour, miss mahi, who lives nearby . you can collect it from her by showing her you ID. after you have entered my house, just enjoy yourself and feel like at home as i have already prepared your room and kept some food items in the kitchen.

the easiest option from train station to my house is taking bus number 10. the bus stop is directly opposite the train staion from where you could take a bus and reach at home easily. alternatively, you can take taxi as well which will take about 15 minutes from station to my house.

iĺl be home in the evening around 5 p.m. after resting for some time, we could have dinner together at local restaurant and go for a walk in the local streets.

i can wait to see you!

best regards,

gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points clearly: Miss Mahi is holding the keys, you explain the bus and taxi options, and you say you will be home around 5 p.m. with a suggestion to have dinner and walk together. These details make the letter useful and maintain a warm, appropriate tone for a relative. The arrangements are generally clear, although the directions could be more precise—for example, you could add the name of the stop where Kanu should get off or explain how to reach the house from it. The evening plan is relevant but could be developed with a specific restaurant or activity. Overall, the task is covered well, with a little room to extend practical details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear sequence: greeting and introduction, key arrangements, travel directions, and evening plans. Each paragraph has a distinct purpose, and linking expressions such as “after,” “alternatively,” and “after resting for some time” help the reader follow the information. The progression is logical and the friendly closing suits the relationship. To make the organisation even smoother, connect the directions more explicitly: the bus stop is described as opposite the station, but the route from the bus to the house is not fully explained. Some sentence boundaries and spacing are inconsistent, which slightly interrupts the flow. Overall, the structure is clear and cohesive, with only minor opportunities to make connections more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including practical expressions such as “collect,” “prepared your room,” and “alternatively.” The tone is friendly and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “excited to having you stay,” “reach at home,” and “local streets.” Spelling and typing slips—including “staion,” “wwork,” and “iĺl”—also reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary presentation. Aim for more natural combinations and proofread carefully; for example, use “excited about your visit,” “get to my house,” and “nearby streets.” This would make the letter sound more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “after,” and “as.” Most of the message is understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following the arrangements. Some grammatical problems remain, however: “i am really excited to having” needs a different verb pattern, and “since you’re arriving … while i¨be at wwork” is an incomplete sentence with an incorrect future form. There are also agreement and article issues in “you can collect it” and “showing her you ID.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly at sentence beginnings. Practise accurate verb patterns and complete sentence construction, then check articles, pronouns, and punctuation during proofreading.
