Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Arvind,
I would love to have to stay with me for one week for your vacation. I already got permission from my manager to take the coming week off, however I won't be able to pick you up from the train station in the morning because of work.
I am truly apologizing, but i made all the arrangements for you. I am going leave my house key under the turtle sitting on the chair next to front door.
When you will arrive at the Metrotown station and get off the train look at your left you will see the elevator. Take the elevator and come to the ground floor, opposite to the train station is bus station. Go to the bus stop and look for Bus 202 at Bay 6. Catch that bus and it will take you to my place at 5129 Manor street, Burnaby. Press the stop button when you see the bus displaying Manor street name, the house just 2 houses down the bus stop.
I already have plan for evening, i booked two movie tickets of your childhood crush actor Ranbir Singh. Movie will start at 7PM and finishes at 9Pm, after that we will go for dinner at Earl's Kitchen and Bar, I know you love there chicken curry with rice and you prefer there red wine sangria with watermelon slush in it.
I am really Excited to meet you after so long.
Your faithfully
Ravinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover all three requested points: you explain where the key will be, give a route from Metrotown station, and describe your evening plans. The address, bus number and bay make the directions practical, while the film and dinner show warmth and personal knowledge of your relative. However, some details are unclear or not fully developed. “Under the turtle sitting on the chair” may not identify the hiding place precisely, and the route would be easier to follow with clearer landmarks or an estimated journey. The evening plan is specific, but the letter does not clearly state when you will be home; the film time suggests this, but you should say directly that you expect to return in the evening and when.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening explains your absence, the next paragraph covers the key, followed by directions and evening plans. This sequence helps the reader locate the practical information, and the closing is appropriate for a personal letter. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated sequence of instructions joined with “and” in the route paragraph. The long directions sentence would be clearer if divided into shorter steps, with transitions such as “Once you reach the ground floor” and “Then”. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as in “the house just 2 houses down the bus stop”; a more explicit reference to the bus stop or your home would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a familiar letter, including practical terms such as “train station”, “elevator”, “Bay 6” and “stop button”, as well as personal details about the film and dinner. These choices make the message understandable and specific. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word combinations: “I am truly apologizing” is not idiomatic in this context, and “childhood crush actor” is awkwardly formed. “The bus displaying Manor street name” is also imprecise. Spelling and capitalisation are inconsistent in “i”, “street”, “7PM” and “Excited”. Aim for more natural collocations and check proper names and capital letters; this would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can generally follow the arrangements. Some errors remain in verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “I would love to have to stay with me” contains an extra “to”, while “I am going leave” needs “to” before “leave”. The conditional instruction “When you will arrive” should use the present simple after “when”, and “I already have plan” needs an article. Several directions are joined into a long sentence, making punctuation and clause boundaries difficult to control. Use shorter sentences for the route and check verb patterns and articles; these changes would improve accuracy while retaining your range of structures.
