A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Anu,
How are you feeling? We're finally getting together after months of speculation! I'm very excited to meet and host you next week, can't wait to see you already!
Anu, while I impatiently await your arrival, I unfortunately won't be able to pick you up at the train station due to a work commitment. I am expected to meet with a client that day and I doubt I'll be home before evening. However, I have made alternate arrangements for you to get home.
I'll be scheduling an Uber to pick you up from the train station for 9'o clock, according to your train's ETA. There's a designated Uber pick-up area by the main entrance of the station, you'll be able to find the taxi there. Apart from this, as I live in a gated society, you'll need to pass the security. Don't worry much about it as I'll be notifying the concierge about your arrival in advance and also leave the key to my apartment with them. Once you get to the main gate, just tell them your name and that you're my visitor, they'll let you in.
I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. I'm sure you must be little disappointed but the plans that I've made for the night will definitely cheer you up. To give you a glimpse, we'll be spending our evening at the place where you've been dying to go, for years. I look forward to seeing you. Come soon.
Best regards,
Vitrag.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the key situation and explain that you cannot meet your relative, that an Uber will collect them, and that the concierge will provide access and the apartment key. The route is only partly explained, however: you identify the station’s main entrance and the gated society, but give no journey details such as the destination, approximate travel time, or what to do if the driver cannot find the house. You also say you will be home in the evening, but do not give a clearer time. The evening plan is deliberately intriguing, yet “the place where you’ve been dying to go” leaves the actual suggestion vague. Develop these practical details so each requested point is fully useful to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is easy to follow, with a clear progression from greeting and explanation, to travel and entry arrangements, and finally to your return and evening plans. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “However,” “Apart from this,” and “Once you get to the main gate” help the reader track the instructions. The friendly tone is consistent and appropriate for a relative. Some transitions and references could be more precise: “the taxi” follows the mention of an Uber, while “the plans that I’ve made for the night” refers to an activity that remains unspecified. Organising the practical directions into a more explicit sequence—from station pickup to gate to apartment—would make the instructions even smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a good range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “work commitment,” “designated pick-up area,” “gated society,” “concierge,” and “inconvenience.” These choices convey the arrangements clearly, and the warm expressions suit the relationship. There are occasional awkward or imprecise collocations: “months of speculation” does not naturally express anticipation of a reunion, and “scheduling an Uber to pick you up” is less idiomatic than saying you have booked one. “I’m expected to meet with a client” is also less direct than necessary. Aim for natural, precise phrasing rather than elevated wording where a simpler expression fits better; this will make the letter sound more fluent and assured.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You show a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional “I doubt I’ll be home before evening” and the time clause “Once you get to the main gate.” Many sentences are accurate and easy to understand. A few errors remain in otherwise clear writing. For example, “I’m very excited to meet and host you next week, can’t wait to see you already!” joins two independent clauses with a comma; use a full stop or conjunction. “for 9’o clock” has incorrect punctuation in the time expression, and “you must be little disappointed” needs an article before “little.” Review sentence boundaries, articles, and punctuation in time expressions. These corrections would improve control without changing your friendly tone.
