IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear aunt. I am extremely happy that you are coming to stay with me. Since your arrival time is 10:00AM and owing to my office engagements I might not be able to reach at train station to pick you up. Therefore, I would like to tell you about the arrangements that I have made so that you can reach home easily and safely.

First thing first, I will leave the spare keys under the flower pot right beside the main door. Since it is the only flower pot there, so I hope that you will not face any difficulty in finding it.

I have also pre - booked a cab service for you. The driver will meet you at the main exit of train station. He will be holding small play card with your name on it. I have also texted you his name, mobile phone number and registration plate, just to be on safe side. The cab will take around 35 minutes to reach home.

Once you enter home, you will find your breakfast inside the oven that I will especailly prepare for you in teh morning. Usually, I come home around 08:00 PM but I ahve already got my half leave approved so I am hoping to reach home around 04:00 PM.

For dinner, I hope that you will cook me same old baked chicken dish.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The letter covers the three requested points: you explain where the spare key is, arrange transport from the station, and give an expected time for your return. The practical details, such as the driver’s name and registration plate, make the arrival plan useful. However, some parts are more fully addressed than others. The route is delegated to a pre-booked cab rather than explained directly, and the evening suggestion is not really developed: asking your aunt to cook the chicken dish does not clearly propose an activity you could enjoy together. The breakfast detail is relevant but takes space from these points. Make the directions explicit and suggest a shared plan, such as cooking or eating dinner together.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a coherent sequence: greeting and context, key arrangements, transport, then your return and dinner. Paragraph breaks help the reader locate each topic, and links such as “Therefore” and “Once you enter home” show the intended progression. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement and shows some stronger control through clear paragraphing. At times, however, linking is mechanical or awkward: “First thing first” and “Since it is the only flower pot there, so…” do not connect ideas smoothly. The final paragraph also feels abrupt. Use simpler, more natural transitions and finish with a clear invitation or shared evening plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a practical personal letter, including useful terms such as “spare keys,” “main exit,” “registration plate,” and “half leave approved.” These details communicate the arrangements clearly, and the tone is generally warm. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “small play card” for the driver’s sign and “on safe side.” Spelling slips including “especailly” and “teh” are noticeable, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for more natural collocations and proofread carefully; accurate everyday expressions will make the letter sound more fluent and assured.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and complex forms, for example the time clause in “Since your arrival time is 10:00AM” and the relative clause “that I will especially prepare for you.” Most meaning is clear, and the reader can follow the arrangements despite some grammatical and punctuation errors. For instance, “I might not be able to reach at train station” has an incorrect preposition and missing article, while “Since it is the only flower pot there, so…” uses an unnecessary second connector. There are also inconsistent spaces around punctuation and some awkward sentence construction. Review articles and prepositions, and read each sentence aloud to catch redundant linking words and improve accuracy.
