IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am very happy that your are coming to my place on Sunday to stay but I am not available on that day until the evening.

I will give my home keys to my neighbour. I already informed about you that you are coming on this Sunday around 8 am and your name as well. Also, his flat number is A-105 just next to my house. So when you will arrive just collect the keys from him.

When you arrive to the Surat railway station, you can take exit from the gate number 7 and near the gate you will find taxi station. Give my home address to the driver and also tell them near the Parshuram Garden so It will easy to find.

Lastly, I feel sorry about that when you will be coming at home and I am not available to welcome you. But I promise that when I will be home we will go for dinner and do some shoppings.

Thank you for your understandings.

Kind regards,

Jency Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the keys will be left with your neighbour, give the neighbour’s flat number, and provide a route from Surat station using Gate 7 and a taxi. You also acknowledge that you will be away until evening and suggest dinner and shopping together. These details make the arrangements practical and relevant. To strengthen the response further, make the directions more precise—for example, include your full address or explain how far the house is from Parshuram Garden—and state a clearer time when you expect to be home. The evening plan is relevant, though it could be developed with a more specific suggestion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the visit, explain the key arrangements, give travel directions, and finish with your evening plans. Paragraphing helps the reader locate each part of the message, and transitions such as “Also” and “Lastly” signal progression. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, and a few references could be clearer: “him” refers to the neighbour, while “them” in the taxi instruction appears to refer to the driver. You could improve flow by using more natural transitions and combining related details—for instance, explain the neighbour’s location and key collection in one concise sequence. A clearer closing transition into your apology and plans would also make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the arrangements, with useful task-related terms such as “railway station,” “taxi,” “keys,” and “neighbour.” The tone is generally suitable for a personal letter. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, including “take exit from the gate,” “taxi station,” “do some shoppings,” and “Thank you for your understandings.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common word partnerships and use the correct form of countable and uncountable nouns. More precise travel language, such as “leave the station through Exit 7” and “take a taxi from the rank,” would make the directions clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and longer sentences, including clauses beginning with “when” and “that,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, errors occur in verb forms, sentence construction, and agreement. Examples include “your are coming,” “I already informed about you,” and the repeated pattern “when you will arrive”; use “you are,” “I have already told him about your visit,” and “when you arrive.” The sentence “so It will easy to find” also needs a subject and verb form, such as “so it will be easy to find.” There are some punctuation and capitalization slips, including the capital “It” mid-sentence. Practise accurate time clauses and complete sentence patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
