IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amala Aunty,

I hope my email finds you well. I'm really excited to see you. I have planned the whole weekend to spend with you and made an itinerary for the day. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I have to work until the evening on the day of your arrival.

There is nothing to worry about how you will be coming home by yourself, as I have made the arrangements for your pick up from the station. My friend Ravi will wait at the station exist to receive you. He will be holding a name card for you to recognize. Once you reach the house, on the left side of the enterance, there's a pot where I left the house keys for you to enter.

As you get in, on your right hand side I have everything ready for you to freshen up and relax. Within no time I will be home.

As soon as I get home, we will do quick home tour and will show you around the neighbourhood. We have a pretty garden around the corner. I'm sure you will love it, as it is filled with beautiful roses.

Once again, I am really sorry for the inconvenience. I will see you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Prat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The letter is warm and relevant, and it explains that Ravi will meet your aunt and that keys have been left at the house. However, the task is only partially addressed because the route from the station to your home is not explained: saying Ravi will collect her avoids giving the requested directions if she needs to travel independently. The key arrangement is also unclear and potentially insecure, as “a pot” is mentioned without specifying where it is or how she can identify it. You say you will be home “within no time,” but this does not give a definite time. The evening plan is present, though a home tour and garden visit are only briefly described. Give precise directions, access details, and a clearer arrival time.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The message has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with a greeting and explanation, moves to arrival and access arrangements, and ends with plans and a friendly closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “However,” “As soon as,” and “Once again” guide the reader. This gives the letter a coherent progression. Some connections are less smooth, however: “As you get in” moves quickly from entering the house to the items prepared for her, and “Within no time I will be home” does not clearly connect to the earlier statement that you are working until evening. The sequence would be easier to follow if the station journey, key collection, and your expected return were presented as explicit steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a personal letter, with appropriate expressions such as “unforeseen circumstances,” “freshen up,” and “neighbourhood.” The warm tone is also maintained through phrases such as “I’m really excited to see you” and “Yours lovingly.” There are some inaccurate or awkward choices that keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise: “station exist” appears to mean “station exit,” while “name card” is less natural than “sign” or “name placard.” “Home tour” is also not the clearest phrase for showing someone around your home. Check spelling and choose collocations that express the intended meaning naturally; this will make the practical instructions easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the subordinate clause “However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I have to work until the evening” and the time clause “As soon as I get home.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the present and future forms are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain. In “There is nothing to worry about how you will be coming home,” the construction should be “There is nothing to worry about regarding how…” or, more naturally, “You don’t need to worry about getting home.” In “we will do quick home tour and will show you,” an article is needed before “quick home tour,” and the repeated “will” is unnecessary. Review articles and sentence patterns while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
