explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Suttu,
I hope you are doing well. I am excited to see you in person today; and happy to spend this weekend here in Cardiff. However, I won't be at home until evening, I am extremely sorry to say this to you.
Eventhough don't worry about the way to reach home and about the keys. I have made some arrangements for those; the keys are under the carpet in front of the house and the one with black marking on it is my room key.
Regarding the journey from train station, you only have five minutes of walk from there; I'll send the postcode and address vis Whatsapp so you can find the place easily..
I should be home by around 6pm. After coming home we could cook dinner together and watch some movies together. Or else if the weather is nice, we could go for a walk to the Alexandra gardens close to the Universilty.
I am looking forward to seeing you soom.
Have a safe journey!
Kind regards'
Carol

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points clearly: you explain where the keys are, give a short route from the station, and say you expect to be home around 6 p.m. with ideas for the evening. The practical details make the letter useful, and the friendly tone suits a relative. The evening plans are the most developed part, with cooking, a film, or a walk as options. The directions are less fully explained: “five minutes of walk” and a promise to send the postcode do not yet tell your relative which route or landmarks to follow. The key arrangement is clear, though you could add a brief instruction about entering safely. More precise directions and a little more detail would make the response feel more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from greeting and apology to the key arrangements, directions, evening plans, and closing. Paragraph breaks help the reader locate each part of the message, and phrases such as “Regarding the journey” and “After coming home” guide the sequence. The ideas are generally easy to follow. Some linking is less natural or slightly repetitive: “Eventhough don't worry” does not connect the ideas correctly, and “together” is repeated in the dinner-and-movie sentence. The double full stop after “easily” also interrupts the flow. Use simpler, accurate transitions—for example, “Don’t worry about getting in” and “We could cook dinner and watch a film”—to make the cohesion smoother and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the arrangements and maintain a warm, informal tone, including “arrangements,” “postcode,” and “looking forward to seeing you.” The wording is generally understandable, but some choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “five minutes of walk” is not idiomatic, and “the one with black marking on it” could identify the key more naturally. There are also spelling errors in “Whatsapp,” “Universilty,” and “soom,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural phrases such as “a five-minute walk,” “the key with a black mark,” and “Alexandra Gardens.” Checking spelling and choosing familiar collocations carefully would improve precision while preserving the friendly style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “I won't be at home until evening” and the conditional suggestion “if the weather is nice, we could go for a walk.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. “I won't be at home until evening, I am extremely sorry” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or “and.” “Eventhough don't worry” lacks a suitable clause structure, and “you only have five minutes of walk” needs a different grammatical construction, such as “it is only a five-minute walk.” The semicolon after the greeting sentence and the closing punctuation also need attention. More accurate sentence boundaries and clause forms would strengthen control.
