IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arsh,

I hope you are doing well. This is regarding your visit to my home as I am eagerly waiting for you, however there some changes in the plan we discussed earlier because I won't be home until the evening.

I would like to bring to your knowledge that I have given the keys to my next door neighbor Mr. Smith, I have sent you the email with his contact information and a video explaining how to get into the house.

It is further added here that in the same email I have sent you the booking details of taxi services which will take you from the train station to my house.

I would also like to bring it to your attention that I will be home around 05:00 pm, and after not only we are going to watch a movie but also I have booked the table in one of your favourite restaurant.

I hope you will empathetic enough to comprehend the situation, and also I am looking forward for a postive and prompt response from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you explain that Mr. Smith has the keys, give the taxi arrangement from the station, and say you expect to be home at 5 p.m. with plans for a film and dinner. These details make the letter relevant and show some development beyond simply listing arrangements. The key handover and route instructions, however, remain quite general: the reader is told to consult an email, rather than being given the neighbor’s contact details or clear directions in the letter. The evening plan is also mentioned but not expanded. The response therefore covers the task well overall, while some points are less fully explained. Include the essential practical information directly and add a little detail about the proposed evening.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible order, moving from the change in plans to the keys, transport, and evening arrangements. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these topics, and the reader can understand the overall message. However, several linking phrases sound mechanical or overly formal for a personal letter, including “It is further added here” and “I would also like to bring it to your attention.” The opening sentence also joins contrasting ideas with “however” in a way that makes the progression awkward. Use simpler transitions such as “As we discussed” or “For the journey,” and make the relationship between ideas clear without repeatedly announcing each point. A more natural closing would also help the letter feel cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the arrangements, including “contact information,” “booking details,” and “favourite restaurant.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, but some are unnatural or poorly matched to a friendly letter: “bring to your knowledge,” “It is further added here,” and “comprehend the situation.” “Taxi services” is less precise than simply referring to the taxi you have arranged, and “postive” contains a spelling error. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit naturalness and precision. Prefer familiar, accurate expressions suited to writing to a relative, and check spelling before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including the contrast in “I won’t be home until the evening” and the paired structure “not only … but also.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. In the opening, “however there some changes” needs a verb (“there are some changes”), and the sentence would be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. In “after not only we are going to watch a movie but also I have booked,” the paired construction is not formed correctly; write, for example, “We can watch a movie and have dinner at a restaurant.” There are also article and preposition problems in “one of your favourite restaurant” and “looking forward for.” Aim for accurate, straightforward sentences before adding complex structures.
