IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ahsan,

I hope you are doing well.

I am pleased to know that you are coming to Lahore and will stay with me. I just got to know that you are traveling by train on friday morning by 9 AM. On friday, I will not be at home as i will leavie for my office work in Islamabad on Thursday, I am sorry for that. But, I have given the keys of my house to my neighbour and explained him about your arrival and also given him your phone number and i will be also share his number to you. You can collect keys from him once you arrived at my house.

I will also guide you how can you reach my house from the train station. Once you have arrived at train station, you should book a online taxi and use the map which i have shared to you on whatspp and you will reach my house in about 30 minutes. Further, don't take too much tension, as i will return to the house by saturday morning and we will enjoy the saturday evening by playing snooker.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Best wishes,

Muhammad Tayyab Usman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: your neighbour will hold the keys, you explain the taxi and map route from the station, and you suggest playing snooker together. The arrangements are relevant and generally clear, so the reader can understand what to do. However, some details are less fully developed than others. For example, “You can collect keys from him once you arrived at my house” does not explain how your relative will enter the house before collecting the keys; clarify whether the neighbour will meet them or let them in. The timing also needs to be consistent: you say you will return “by saturday morning,” although the task says you will be away until evening. A precise arrival time and a clearer evening plan would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: greeting and context, key arrangements, directions, then your return and an activity. Paragraphing helps separate the main points, and phrases such as “Once you have arrived” guide the reader through the directions. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. Some connections are less smooth or clear, however. The long sentence beginning “On friday, I will not be at home” combines your absence, apology, and key arrangements, making the information harder to follow. “Further” is not a natural transition into reassurance, and the shift from returning Saturday morning to enjoying Saturday evening could be linked more clearly. Use shorter sentences and more precise linking phrases to make the progression feel less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant terms such as “neighbour,” “collect keys,” “train station,” “online taxi,” and “snooker.” The message remains understandable, and the friendly tone suits the recipient. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, such as “book a online taxi,” “take too much tension,” and “I just got to know.” Spelling and capitalization also need attention in “whatspp,” “friday,” and “i.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the arrangements, but more natural collocations and careful proofreading would improve control. Aim to use familiar expressions accurately rather than translating phrases directly from another language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional-style explanation “as I will leave for my office work” and the sequence “Once you have arrived … you should book.” The main message is generally clear, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in tense and sentence construction. In “once you arrived at my house,” use “once you arrive”; “I will be also share his number” needs a corrected verb form, such as “I will also share his number.” The sentence beginning “On Friday” is a run-on, and “a online taxi” has an article error. Improve accuracy by checking verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use a mix of sentence structures.
