A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hi Mom,
How are you? Its been a while I have'nt seen you. I can't tell you how much I miss you. I was about to come to pick you but, unfortunatey I got anurgent work from my office.
I have given my house keys to the receptionist. She will definetely help you to get into the house. Also, I have made pasta and curries for you to eat as these are your favourite dishes.
I have already booked a cab for you. So, when you reached the train station , you just have to go to Gate number 6 which will be on your left. And, then just besides starbucks there will a black Tesla GT0785. The driver name is John and he will drive you home in about 20 minutes.
Please let me know whenever you reached home. After finishing this meeting i will right away come to home to see you as i have been waiting this for about 2 months. At night, we will probably go to your favourite restaurant in Scarborough. See you soon!
Lots of love,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points and keep the message appropriately personal. The key arrangement is clear: you have left the keys with the receptionist, and you also explain that food is prepared. The route is detailed, with Gate 6, the Starbucks landmark, the car description and registration, the driver’s name, and an estimated journey time. You also say you will come home after your meeting and suggest visiting a restaurant in Scarborough. These details make the arrangements practical and the purpose clear. To develop the response further, clarify exactly how your mother should identify the receptionist or collect the keys, and give a more definite time for your return rather than “right away.” The evening plan could also be extended with a specific activity or choice.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: greeting and explanation, access to the house, travel directions, and your return and evening plans. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “So,” and “After finishing this meeting” make the progression easy to follow. The message is coherent overall, with the travel details presented in a useful order. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, particularly the repeated use of “And” to introduce directions. The reference in “these are your favourite dishes” is understandable, but the transition from the key arrangement to the food could be smoother. To make the organisation more flexible, group related arrangements clearly and vary the links between sentences rather than relying on basic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a familiar letter, including practical details such as “receptionist,” “train station,” “Gate number 6,” and “driver.” The affectionate expressions “how much I miss you” and “Lots of love” suit the relationship and tone. There are some spelling and word-choice errors, including “unfortunatey,” “definetely,” and “urgent work,” which should be “unfortunately,” “definitely,” and more naturally “an urgent task at work.” “Besides Starbucks” is less precise than “next to Starbucks,” and “come to home” is an unnatural phrase. These do not prevent the reader from understanding the arrangements, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the language more natural and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example, “I have made pasta and curries for you to eat as these are your favourite dishes” and the sentence explaining where the car will be. The meaning is generally clear, and the response includes a range of past, present, and future forms. Some grammatical errors remain: “Its been a while I have'nt seen you” needs a clearer construction, such as “It’s been a while since I saw you”; “when you reached” should be “when you reach”; and “there will a black Tesla” needs “there will be a black Tesla.” There are also errors in “the driver name” and “I will right away come to home.” Check apostrophes, verb forms, and sentence punctuation to improve accuracy.
