IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope you are doing well. I am really excited to hear that you will be coming to stay with me next week. Unfortunately, i would not be home when you arriving in the morning because i have to work. But, do not worry about it, I will make all necessary arragementfor you.

First of all, I will leave a spare key of my apartment at neighbours home and his name is Mr. Brown. just ring his bell and tell him you are my cousin. He will provide you the keys and show you where everything is.

As for getting to my house, when you leave the train station, turn right and walk straight for 3 minutes. Afterthat, you will be at taxi stand and give the address which i am mentioning in this letter to cab driver. They will drop you in front of building. And my apartment number is 313.

I expect to be home 6p.m. In evening we can sit together and catch up on old memories. we can also cook food together. If weather is nice, we could go for walk in the night time.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

yours sincerely,

kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. You explain that a spare key will be left with Mr Brown, give directions from the station, and say you expect to be home at 6 p.m. You also suggest several evening activities, including catching up, cooking, and going for a walk. These details make the arrangements practical and the purpose of the letter clear. To strengthen the response further, make the directions and key arrangements more precise: for example, include the house address rather than referring to an address “mentioned in this letter,” and clarify whether Mr Brown will show your relative around or simply hand over the key. The ideas are relevant and extended, though a few details could be more fully specified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, useful sequence: greeting and explanation, key collection, travel directions, and evening plans. Paragraphing helps the reader locate each part, while phrases such as “First of all,” “As for getting to my house,” and “Looking forward to seeing you soon” guide the progression. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “and” in the directions and activity suggestions. You could improve the flow by connecting steps more naturally—for instance, use “Once you reach the taxi stand…”—and by keeping each paragraph focused on one stage of the visit. The organisation is already clear; more flexible transitions would make cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the arrangements and maintain a friendly tone, with useful phrases such as “spare key,” “train station,” and “catch up on old memories.” However, the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “leave a spare key … at neighbours home,” “give the address … to cab driver,” and “go for walk in the night time.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “arragementfor” and “Afterthat” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise travel language, such as “leave a spare key with my neighbour” and “take a taxi to my building.” This would make the message sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, such as “Unfortunately, I would not be home … because I have to work” and the conditional suggestion “If weather is nice, we could go for walk.” Meaning is generally clear, but errors occur across verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “when you arriving” needs a finite verb form, “I expect to be home 6p.m.” needs a preposition, and “They will drop you” does not clearly agree with the singular “cab driver.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb phrase and required articles or prepositions, while continuing to use a mix of sentence patterns.
