IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I am really excited that you are finally coming to visit. Unfortunately I wont be home when you arrive and therefore I asked the next door-neighbour to give you the key. Please knock at apartment 101, this is the door on the right side.
Getting from the train station to my house is a walk in the park. First you get of the train and walk to departure B. There a taxi driver in a pink taxi will wait for you. Ask him to take you to Ben Viljoen street. When arriving in abem aviljoen street carry on driving for about 2 minutes and then you will find a yellow block of flats on the right hand side.
I will be home by 2. I thought we can go out for sinner and a scary movie at the groove mall. i don't know what you are in the mood for, but i thought pizza and wine can be an excellent dinner since it is easy to eat and this give us lots of time to talk.
I can't wait to see you. See you tomorrow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter covers all three required points: you explain that a neighbour will provide the key, give directions from the station, and describe your plans for the evening. The route includes useful landmarks, such as the pink taxi and yellow block of flats, and the invitation to have dinner and watch a film makes the message personal. However, some details are unclear or not fully developed. For example, “departure B” may not clearly identify where the taxi will be, and the key arrangement would be more reassuring if you explained how your relative should ask for or collect it. You say you will be home by 2, but the task says you will be away until evening, so clarify the time to avoid confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the opening explains the key, the next paragraph gives travel directions, and the final paragraph covers your arrival and evening plans. This paragraphing and the use of “First,” “then,” and “When arriving” help the reader follow the route. The letter also has a friendly opening and closing. To make the progression more consistently smooth, clarify the connection between the station, “departure B,” and the taxi, as the current directions jump between these points. Some linking is also slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated sequence of instructions. More precise referencing and a clearer transition into the evening arrangements would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the practical arrangements and maintain a warm, informal tone. Phrases such as “coming to visit,” “on the right-hand side,” and “in the mood for” suit a personal letter, while “a walk in the park” adds a conversational touch. However, several noticeable word-choice and spelling errors reduce precision: “get of the train” should be “get off the train,” “sinner” appears to mean “dinner,” and “abem aviljoen street” is inconsistent with the earlier street name. “Departure B” is also an unclear label in this context. Aim for accurate spelling of names and more precise transport vocabulary so the reader can follow the directions without uncertainty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “Unfortunately I wont be home when you arrive” and “I don't know what you are in the mood for, but I thought pizza and wine can be an excellent dinner.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “this give us lots of time” needs subject–verb agreement (“this gives us”), and “I thought we can go” would be more consistent as “I thought we could go.” The sentence beginning “There a taxi driver” is missing a verb, and “When arriving in … street” is an awkwardly formed clause. Check verb forms, complete sentence structure, and capitalisation of “I” and “I’ll” to improve accuracy.
