IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hello Neha,

I'm so happy that finally I will be meeting you after so long. I'm writing this letter to tell you that the day you will be landing here in Canada I won't be home until the evening.

I already informed my manager that my sister is coming to Canada for a month. However, he already approved my leave and half day shift for the day you will be landing here. We received an email yesterday about an urgent meeting and this meeting is really important for our company. Therefore, my manager requested me to stay. The route is very simple it will only take an hour. First you just need to take a bus 104 which will take you to a train station. On the train station you will be looking for westbound train to the City Centre. My house is just beside the City Centre bulding name is Lee drive.

I've already informed the receptionist that my sister will be coming. He will handover the apartment keys to you. I will try my best to reach home by 6 after finishing my meeting. Also, I've planned a dinner at the Italian restaurant.

Please give me text if you need any help as I won't be able to pick your call during the meeting. Can't wait to see you!

Lots of love,

Aakansha.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that the receptionist will provide the keys, give a route from the station, and say you expect to be home around 6 before suggesting dinner at an Italian restaurant. The friendly opening and closing also suit a letter to a relative. The arrangements are relevant, but some details are not fully clear or developed. For example, “take a bus 104 which will take you to a train station” does not identify which station or where to get off, and “My house is just beside the City Centre” gives limited guidance. Clarify the exact route and address or a recognisable landmark. You could also make the key handover arrangement more precise, such as where the receptionist is and what your relative should ask for.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The information is arranged in a generally sensible order: you explain why you will be away, give travel directions, describe the key arrangement, and finish with your return time and evening plan. Paragraphing helps separate the greeting, main information, and closing. However, the route and key details appear in an order that could be easier to follow, and some links between ideas feel mechanical. For instance, “However” and “Therefore” connect the work explanation, but the relationship between your approved leave and the later urgent meeting could be made clearer. Group the directions together, then explain the key collection and evening plans. Clearer references—such as specifying who “he” refers to—would also make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a personal letter, including practical expressions such as “westbound train,” “urgent meeting,” and “reach home.” The warm phrases “Lots of love” and “Can’t wait to see you” are appropriate for the relationship. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however, such as “landing here” for arriving by train, “On the train station,” and “give me text.” “City Centre bulding name is Lee drive” is also difficult to interpret, so use a clear address or landmark. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but more natural travel and contact vocabulary would improve precision. Check spelling in “bulding” and capitalisation in “Lee drive.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including “We received an email yesterday about an urgent meeting and this meeting is really important for our company.” Most of the message remains understandable, and errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some sentence structures and grammatical forms need more control. For example, “The route is very simple it will only take an hour” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. “I will try my best to reach home by 6 after finishing my meeting” would be clearer as “after I finish my meeting.” There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “On the train station” and “a train station.” Review sentence boundaries and use consistent, natural tense patterns when describing the arrangements.
