A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Shalav,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to inform you about the arrangements I have made for you on your arrival to I am very excited to see you as Its been almost one year since we have met each other.

You are arriving on July 10 which is a monday and infortunately I will be working from office on that day since its the first day of week. But, I will be dropping the keys to the reception of the building so when you reach here please ask the keys from the security personnel. Furthermore, I have already informed them about your arrival and they will hand you the keys and if you need any assistance to get to the apartment please aks them and they will help you get the room.

Moreover, as you are visting Toronto for the first time I want to assist you with the pathway to follow when you reach the train station. Upon reaching the Union station you have to take the red bus from outside the station. Then upon boarding the bus you have get off at the yorkdale street and once you reach the stop you will see the black building right on the left side of the road. Then just enter the building reach out to any security personnel on the reception and tell them that you are visiting me and they will assist you further.

I usually get home by 6pm in the evening but as you are visiting I will try to log out sooner than my usual time and get home by 4.30 pm. Once I get home I will cook you faviourite Indian food and we will enjoy that by watching a known bollywood movie.

I can wait to see you but in the meanwhile if you have any question please feel to reach out over my phone.

Take care,

Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose. You explain that the keys will be left with reception, give a route from Union Station, and say when you expect to be home, followed by a suggestion to share Indian food and a Bollywood film. These details make the arrangements useful and the tone appropriate for a relative. The directions and key collection are especially clear in their overall intent, although a few practical details—such as the bus number or a more precise stop/location—would make them easier to follow. The evening plan is relevant but could be developed slightly, for example by offering an alternative if you arrive later than expected. Overall, the task is fully addressed with ideas extended, though some details could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible sequence: opening, key arrangements, travel directions, your arrival time and evening plans, then a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader locate each part of the message, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Then” guide the progression. The letter is easy to follow overall. At times, however, connectors are used somewhat mechanically, and several directions are packed into long sentences, particularly the route from the station. The opening sentence also combines the purpose of the letter with personal background, making the transition less smooth. Use shorter steps for the directions and vary or omit linking words where the relationship between ideas is already clear. This would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary suited to the situation, including “reception,” “security personnel,” “train station,” and “assist,” and the reader can understand the arrangements. There is some useful variety, but word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. Examples include “pathway to follow” where “route to take” is more idiomatic, “get the room” where “get to the apartment” is intended, and “a known Bollywood movie” where “a popular Bollywood film” would sound natural. Spelling slips such as “infortunately,” “visting,” “aks,” and “faviourite” are also noticeable. Focus on accurate spelling and common collocations, especially when describing travel and arrangements, to make the message more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, including time clauses and conditional phrasing, as in “when you reach here” and “if you need any assistance.” However, errors occur frequently, and some longer sentences are difficult to process. For example, “I am writing to inform you about the arrangements I have made for you on your arrival to I am very excited” joins two ideas without a grammatical connection. Other issues include “you have get off” and “I can wait to see you,” where the verb forms do not express the intended meaning. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need attention, particularly in the directions paragraph. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then check verb forms, articles, and punctuation when combining ideas.
