Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mishal,

First of all i hope you are doing well, secondly Mishal I am so thrilled that you are visitig Lahore after so long, i believe it's been 2 years that we have not seen eachother. I can't believe that we have been apart for so long. I remember how we fough with out parents that we wanted admission in same university, God it was a hastle, but we accomplished our task and studied together in same univeristy. From doing everything together to a point when that day came that we entered our practical lives and you had to move to Karachi. To be honest, it's been quite hard for me and i know for you too. Though we are a family but we became more like best friends and i really missed you so much.

Unfortunetly I will not be there to pick you up or welcome you at the house when you arrive because i will be away for a conference, but I will be back in the evening. Untill then i have made some arrangements for you. First of all , when you reach Lahore train station there will be a irl in blcak suit her name is Minahil, she will waiting there for you with a sign board in her hand with your name on it, she is my assisstent so she will drive you to my house. Secondly when you reach the house on our porch there is a small red carpet on the right, underneath that carpet you will find the keys to the house. You have to twist the key three times in order to open the door, if you still have any confusion ask Minahil to help you open it plus she will also take care of anything you need at all especially food, do not hesitate at all for anything.

I will be home before 8 pm, I have made a reservation fo our dinner at our favorite spot and then we can visit our other relatives as well, only if you wish to do that on the same day, if not then after you are relaxed and comfortable make a list of things that you would want to do for the evening or we can plan it out together.

Take care Mishal I hope to see you soon mate.

With Love

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requirements: Minahil will meet Mishal at the station and drive her to the house, the key is hidden under the porch carpet, and you explain that you will return before 8 p.m. with dinner plans. These details make the letter useful and appropriately personal. The arrangements for entering the house are especially clear, although the instruction to turn the key three times could be clarified if it refers to a particular lock. The evening plans are less fully developed: you mention dinner and visiting relatives, then offer to plan activities together, but do not suggest a specific alternative if Mishal is tired. The long opening about your shared history is warm, but takes space that could be used to develop the practical arrangements and plans further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: a personal opening, practical arrival instructions, and plans for the evening. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “Untill then” guide the reader through the arrangements. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated sequencing language, and the opening is much longer than the practical sections, so the focus shifts before the task details begin. A few references could also be clearer: “she” follows the description of Minahil, but the sentence is crowded with several actions, making the sequence harder to follow. Use shorter sentences for the arrival instructions and connect ideas more naturally, while keeping the personal tone.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a friendly personal letter, including relevant expressions such as “conference,” “reservation,” “porch,” and “do not hesitate.” The warm tone is also conveyed through phrases such as “best friends” and “favorite spot.” However, spelling errors and some inaccurate or awkward word choices reduce precision, for example “visitig,” “hastle,” “assisstent,” and “a irl in blcak suit.” Some expressions are also less natural in context, such as “entered our practical lives” and “make a list of things that you would want to do for the evening.” Proofread spelling carefully and choose more idiomatic phrases, such as “started our working lives” and “decide what you’d like to do this evening.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “that we wanted admission in same university” and the conditional “if not then after you are relaxed and comfortable…”. The main message remains understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, articles, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “she will waiting there” needs a finite verb (“she will be waiting”), while “there will be a irl… her name is Minahil” joins ideas without a clear grammatical connection. The opening also contains a run-on sequence joined by commas, and “i hope” should use the capitalised pronoun “I.” Break long sentences into shorter units, check articles and verb forms, and use full stops or conjunctions to connect clauses accurately.
