explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Shikha,
Hope you are done with your packing and ready to leave on this Thursday. Your train will arrive in Delhi around 8:00am, but unfortunately, I won't be able to pick you from the railway station. I have a mandatory and important meeting to attend in the office at 9:00am, so I have to rush to the office that morning.
But you don’t worry at all, I will drop my house keys just next door with my neighbours and you can just call me onve you reach, I will ask them to hand it to you.
Also, I have already booked a cab for you from station to my place and cab details are DL 9c 9348, The cab driver will call you at 9:00am and you can locate him easily and also dont forget to provide him an OTP 2552.
I will try my level best to reach home by 6:00pm and we will go for a movie first and for a dinner together.
I am really excited to meet you soon!
Yours lovingly,
Sakshi Abbott

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three required points clearly. The key arrangement is explained through the neighbours, and the instruction to call on arrival makes the handover understandable. You also give the route arrangement in practical detail by naming the cab and providing its registration and OTP, then state that you expect to be home by 6:00pm and suggest a movie and dinner. These specific details make the letter useful and relevant. To strengthen the response further, clarify exactly how Shikha should identify or contact the neighbours, and make the journey instructions more complete—for example, confirm where the cab will meet her and that it will take her directly to your home. The evening plan could also be expressed more naturally and precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear sequence: you explain why you cannot meet Shikha, describe the key and cab arrangements, and finish with your expected arrival and evening plans. The opening and closing also suit a personal letter, and linking phrases such as “but unfortunately,” “Also,” and “I will try” help the reader follow the message. The paragraphing separates the main arrangements reasonably well. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the key and transport details could be grouped and ordered more smoothly. For example, explain first where the cab will meet her, then how she will reach the house and obtain the keys. This would make the practical instructions easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes useful task-specific terms such as “railway station,” “house keys,” “cab driver,” and “OTP.” The tone is warm and appropriate for a relative. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “done with your packing,” “drop my house keys just next door,” and “go for a movie first and for a dinner together.” “Mandatory and important” is also repetitive, while “level best” is an awkward collocation in this context. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Aim for more idiomatic phrases and avoid using two near-synonyms where one clear word would be stronger.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Your train will arrive … but unfortunately, I won't be able to pick you” and the reason clause explaining your meeting. Most of the message remains easy to understand, and the future forms generally communicate the arrangements clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “I will drop my house keys just next door with my neighbours,” the sentence structure is awkward; “I will leave my house keys with my neighbours next door” is clearer. The final plan needs parallel structure: “we will go to a movie and have dinner together.” Review articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries, especially where several instructions are joined with “and.”
