IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Aunty Rose,

I want to inform you that I will not be able to pick you up today from the train station because I have a meeting which is sheduled around 3 pm, which, in a way, clashes with the time of your arrival.

Upon your arrival, you will see a small bus stop with the number 420 and written as Lambton. You can take the bus, which will drop you directly in front of the apartment. Please don't worry, as I have arranged for the key to be in the guard house, which is situated right at the front entrance of my apartment. You can ask for Ahmad, and he will hand over the key to you.

Please make yourself at home, and I will be back as soon as my meeting finishes around 4.30 pm. I have planned a small seafood dinner by the seaside around the Sydney Opera House. The view is spectacular, and they have your favourite food, pasta, which is famous for its taste and is cooked by a famous Italian chef. There is so much I want to share about my life's updates, as I have not seen you for a year now.

I hope i have given guided you pretty well and see you soon at home.

With love,

Aruvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you explain that Ahmad at the guard house will provide the key, give a bus route from the station, and say when you expect to return before suggesting dinner together. The friendly opening and closing also suit a letter to a relative. The arrangements are generally clear, although the directions could be more precise: “a small bus stop with the number 420 and written as Lambton” does not fully explain where to find the stop or what to do after getting off. The evening plan is engaging, but the seafood dinner and pasta description is slightly confusing. Clarifying these details and extending the practical directions would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible progression: you explain why you cannot meet your aunt, describe the journey and key arrangements, then move to your return and evening plans. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “Upon your arrival” and “Please make yourself at home” guide the reader. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections could be smoother, however: the long opening sentence repeats “which” and makes the timing explanation cumbersome, while the final sentence, “I hope i have given guided you pretty well,” interrupts the otherwise clear ending. Use simpler transitions and check that each sentence connects naturally to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range for a personal letter, including “clashes with,” “arranged,” “spectacular,” and “make yourself at home.” These choices communicate the arrangements and create a warm tone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions that keep the vocabulary from being consistently flexible and precise. For example, “a small bus stop with the number 420 and written as Lambton” is awkward, and “famous for its taste” and “cooked by a famous Italian chef” repeat “famous” without adding much information. “Seafood dinner” followed by “your favourite food, pasta” is also an unclear pairing. Choose more natural transport wording and describe the meal consistently; proofread spelling such as “sheduled” and capitalization of “I.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “because I have a meeting” and “which is situated right at the front entrance.” Most meaning remains clear, and you use future forms appropriately when describing your return and plans. Some grammatical errors and awkward sentence construction remain. The opening sentence is overloaded with repeated relative clauses (“which … which”), and “I hope i have given guided you” has an incorrect verb construction. In “I will be back as soon as my meeting finishes around 4.30 pm,” the timing relationship is not expressed cleanly. Use shorter sentences where needed, check verb patterns, and capitalize the pronoun “I” consistently.
