IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Naren,

I hope you're doing well. It's been a while since we last spoke. I'm elated to know that you're coming to Toronto to stay with me. I am writing to let you know that I'll be out for work until the evening and will not be able to pick you from the train station.

To begin with, I already made some arrangements for you so that you can pick the keys directly from our neighbours, who live next right to us. We have two entrances, I suggest that you, use the side entrance on the east because the main door on the north is extremely hard to close. Please feel free to relax and make yourself comfortable and have the breakfast that I already prepared.

From the train station, I advise that you either book a cab in uber directly to 10 Hathway Drive or better take the 21C TTC bus and get down at Brimley and Brimorton intersection and walk for up to 5 mins to reach the house.

Finally, once I'm back from work we can go out to have an early dinner at your favorite Italian Cuisine. After that, we can hang out in the downtown streets and end our day with a marvel movie.

I hope this sounds like a plan. Let me know your thoughts.

Best regards,

Raj kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain that the keys can be collected from the neighbours, give both a taxi and bus route, and say you will be home in the evening with plans for dinner and a film. The practical details, including the side entrance and the bus stop, make the message useful and relevant. The evening plan is engaging, although “hang out in the downtown streets” is less specific than the arrangements for getting into the house and travelling from the station. To strengthen the response further, clarify exactly how your relative should identify or contact the neighbours and give a more precise indication of when you expect to arrive home. Overall, the purpose and tone are clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear sequence: a friendly opening, arrangements for entering the house, directions from the station, and plans for the evening. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “From the train station,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the information. The closing also fits the informal relationship. Some linking is a little formulaic, particularly the repeated use of sequencing phrases, and the directions could be divided or ordered more explicitly so the two travel options are easy to compare. For example, present the taxi option and bus option as separate, complete instructions. These are small refinements; the overall organisation and progression are already clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a friendly practical letter, including “arrangements,” “side entrance,” “intersection,” and “make yourself comfortable.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “elated” and “hang out,” though the former sounds overly formal for this personal message. Several word combinations are inaccurate or awkward: “pick the keys directly,” “book a cab in uber,” and “get down at” do not sound natural in this context. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Italian Cuisine” and “marvel movie.” These choices do not prevent understanding, but more natural collocations and consistent register would improve precision and flexibility. Prefer familiar, accurate phrasing over unusually formal vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “neighbours, who live next right to us” and the time clause “once I'm back from work.” Many sentences are clear and correctly formed, and the reader can follow the arrangements without difficulty. A few errors remain in sentence construction and punctuation. In “We have two entrances, I suggest that you, use the side entrance,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma, and the comma after “you” is unnecessary. “I already made” would be more appropriate as “I have already made” for a present arrangement, while “pick you from the train station” needs “pick you up.” Review clause boundaries, verb forms, and punctuation to make the otherwise varied structures more consistently accurate.
