IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Dave,

It is my absolute pleasure to know that you are coming to stay at my house.I saw your train ticket, and I have to inform you that regretabbly I would not be available pick up you from the train station. I have to attend a very urgent business meeting in office for which I had been preparing for couple of weeks.

All arrangements for you to stay at home have been made. As my house lock is digital, you can just use the OTP of 4546 to unlock and enter the houes. Furthermore, a room, beside the kitchen and in front of living room, has been reserved for you.

Reaching to my houes from the train station is straightforward. Just take the Red-Line metro from the train station and get down at Business Bay station. Upon exiting the station, you will find a big blue building in front of you; our house is just behind this blue building.

I will be at home straight after my business meeting which will finish at 5PM. I have already reserved spot for myself and you at a nearby restaurant for the dinner. This restaurant serves Japanese cuisine which is your favourite.

Is there anything you would like to me arrange in advance, please reply to this letter.

Yours faithfully,

Waqass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you explain the digital lock code and reserved room, give a metro route and landmark, and say you expect to be home after the meeting before suggesting dinner at a Japanese restaurant. These details make the letter useful and appropriately personal. The arrangements and route are clear, but some ideas are less fully developed: for example, the directions could include how to reach your house from the blue building, and the evening plan could specify a time or confirm whether the reservation is fixed. The opening also focuses on not being able to collect Dave rather than immediately reassuring him about arrival arrangements. More complete practical detail would make the response feel more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: arrival and your absence, access to the house, directions, and evening plans. Separate paragraphs help the reader locate each piece of information, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Upon exiting,” and “I will be at home” support progression. The overall arrangement is easy to follow. Some connections are slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of explicit transitions, and the final request for a reply feels somewhat detached from the dinner plan. You could make the flow more natural by linking the arrangements directly—for example, explaining that the code will let Dave enter while you are at work—and ending with a warm, connected invitation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a practical personal letter, including relevant terms such as “digital,” “OTP,” “metro,” “reserved,” and “Japanese cuisine.” These choices communicate the arrangements and plans clearly. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “pick up you,” “Reaching to my house,” and “reserved spot for myself and you.” Spelling slips in “regretabbly” and “houes” also reduce accuracy. The meaning remains understandable, but more natural everyday phrasing would improve precision and fluency. Check spelling carefully and learn common combinations such as “pick you up,” “get to my house,” and “booked a table for us.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “for which I had been preparing” and the time clause “which will finish at 5PM.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the paragraphing and sentence boundaries are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “I would not be available pick up you” needs an infinitive construction, “for couple of weeks” needs an article, and “anything you would like to me arrange” has an incorrect verb pattern. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as the missing space after “house.” Practise verb patterns and articles, and proofread sentence structure and punctuation to make the writing more consistently accurate.
