IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello Samantha,

I make refernece to your visit coming up on 26th October. From your email, your train arrives Abuja in the morning by 9 am. As you know, 26th is Monday which is a work day. I leave to work by 7 am .

However, I have made arrangement with a friend's personal driver simeon, to pick you up from the train station by 10.30 am. The train station is about 2 hours drive to my house so I estimate 1 pm for your arrival. Getting into my apartment would not be a problem as I have discussed with my neighbour Lucy and she agreed to keep the keys for you to enable you have access. Her contact is [redacted phone]

There would be variety of foods and drinks in the kitchen for you to make a choice when you arrive. The televison will keep you busy till I return around 5 pm. The wifi is always on and enabled so you can make a choice of what you prefer to watch. In the evening, we would visit City Park to watch life band and eat grilled fish for dinner.

Best regards.

Alice

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points: Simeon will collect Samantha, Lucy will provide access to the keys, and Alice gives her expected return time and an evening plan. These details make the arrangements practical, and the proposed visit to City Park adds a personal, relevant suggestion. The response also gives a route-related detail—the station is about two hours from the house—but does not explain how Samantha should travel from the station to the house beyond saying a driver will pick her up. The arrival and access arrangements are therefore clearer than the directions, and the evening plan could be developed slightly further. This covers the task well overall, while fuller directions and a little more detail would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: the opening establishes the visit and Alice’s work schedule, the next paragraph explains the pickup and keys, and the final paragraph covers refreshments, entertainment, and the evening plan. This progression makes the letter easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “so” help connect the arrangements. Paragraphing is appropriate and the reader can distinguish the main topics. Some connections are a little abrupt, particularly the move from the key arrangements to the food and television, and repeated use of “you” in the final paragraph makes the flow somewhat list-like. A smoother transition and more varied referencing would make the cohesion feel more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the practical purpose of the letter, with useful expressions such as “personal driver,” “have access,” “variety of foods and drinks,” and “grilled fish for dinner.” These choices communicate the arrangements clearly, and the writer attempts some less common wording. However, several spelling and word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision: “refernece,” “televison,” and “life band” appear, while “I make reference to your visit” sounds overly formal for a friendly letter. “Make a choice” is also repeated and is less natural than a more direct expression. More accurate spelling and natural, audience-appropriate phrasing would strengthen the vocabulary while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the subordinate clause “as I have discussed with my neighbour Lucy” and the reason-and-result construction “so I estimate 1 pm for your arrival.” Most sentences communicate the intended arrangements without difficulty. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “I make reference” and “I leave to work” use present forms where the context calls for a past arrangement or a future schedule; “I have made arrangement” needs a plural or an article; and “your train arrives Abuja” is missing a preposition. There are also punctuation and spacing slips, such as the extra spaces around several sentences. Checking tense, articles, and prepositions would improve accuracy.
