Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Neha,
I hope you are doing well. I am really excited to see you next week. Unfortunately, I won't be home until evening, that's why I'm writing to explain how to get into the house and reach my place.
First of all, I made the arrangements to collect the house keys. My neighbour, Mr. John, who lives next door, will assist you in getting the keys from the apartment's office. Simply knock on his door, and I will send you his contact number just in case he is outside. He is very friendly and kind, so don't hesitate if you need any further assistance.
Regarding the direction, once you arrive at the railway station, take bus number 5A towards the city, get off at the 5th stop and go straight from the shopping mall on your left. You will see the Ryamond society, and my house number is 101.
I should be home by 5 pm, then we will go outside for dinner, and then enjoy a movie at home. It will be a really enjoyable weekend.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose. The key arrangement is specific: Neha should ask your next-door neighbour for the keys at the apartment office, with a contact number available if he is out. The route also gives useful landmarks and transport details, and you state that you expect to be home by 5 pm before suggesting dinner and a film. These details make the message practical and relevant. To make the arrangements fully clear, explain exactly how Mr John will provide or collect the keys, since “assist you in getting the keys from the apartment’s office” leaves the process slightly uncertain. You could also make the route more precise by clarifying where to turn after the shopping mall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is organised in a clear sequence: an opening, arrangements for the keys, directions, and evening plans. Paragraphing helps the reader locate each part of the message, while transitions such as “First of all” and “Regarding the direction” signal the topic changes. The letter also has an appropriate closing. This logical progression makes the instructions easy to follow. Some linking is a little formulaic, and the directions would benefit from a more explicit sequence of steps—for example, separating the bus journey from the walk from the fifth stop. The sentence beginning “I should be home by 5 pm” also joins the arrival time and evening activities rather abruptly; a clearer transition would make the final paragraph flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for a practical personal letter, and several choices suit the friendly tone, including “neighbour,” “contact number,” “assistance,” and “get off at the 5th stop.” The writer also uses relevant transport and location terms to make the directions understandable. However, the range is not consistently precise or natural: “the arrangements to collect the house keys” and “go straight from the shopping mall on your left” are awkward or unclear expressions, while “go outside for dinner” is less idiomatic than a more specific phrase. The spelling “Ryamond” may also confuse the reader if the society’s name is intended to be “Raymond.” More accurate collocations and precise directional vocabulary would strengthen the message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter uses a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the relative clause “Mr. John, who lives next door” and the conditional phrase “just in case he is outside.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and the instructions are generally easy to understand. A few errors remain. In “Unfortunately, I won't be home until evening, that's why I'm writing,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop or “so.” The phrase “go straight from the shopping mall on your left” is also structurally unclear, and “then we will go outside for dinner, and then enjoy a movie” would be more balanced as “we can go out for dinner and then enjoy a movie.” Review sentence boundaries and parallel verb structures.
