IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sara,

I am exciting to hear that you will be visiting to my home and going to spend some quality time with me. Unfortunately, due to my prior work commitment, I won't be able to come at a station to welcome you.

However, I have a good relation with a neighbour, so I gave them house keys and explained everything about the house, which will help them to get you in the house easily. Moreover, someone from their family will be with you until I come, so you can't feel alone at home.

I would recommend finding a taxi near the the station once you get off from the train. The easiest way to find the taxi is to download an app called "Town Taxi", where you can simply enter street address with house number and you will get a multiple option to select a taxi driver.

I believe I would be at home around 5 pm. I already booked a ticket to watch movie and after that we will go for the dinner before returning to home.

I hope you reach home safely without any trouble.

See you soon,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and the letter is appropriately personal. The arrangements are clear: your neighbour has the keys, and a family member will stay with Sara. You also give a route option and say you expect to be home at 5 pm, followed by a specific evening plan. These details make the response relevant and mostly complete. To strengthen it further, clarify exactly how Sara will identify or contact the neighbour and how she should reach the house from the station; recommending a taxi app gives a method, but not much route guidance. The evening plan is clear, though a brief check that the booked film suits Sara would make the suggestion feel more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: greeting and explanation, key arrangements, travel advice, and evening plans. Paragraphing separates these points effectively, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “I believe” help guide the reader. The closing is also suitable for a personal letter. Some connections could be more precise: “someone from their family” requires the reader to infer that “their” refers to the neighbour, and the transition from the taxi app to the house is not supported by specific directions. Aim to make references explicit and use linking words where they clarify the relationship between ideas, rather than relying on them to carry the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this familiar situation, including phrases such as “prior work commitment,” “quality time,” and “booked a ticket.” The meaning is generally clear, and the tone suits a letter to a relative. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “I am exciting,” “good relation,” “get you in the house,” and “returning to home.” There is also a repeated “the” in “near the the station.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build accuracy by learning common phrases as complete units—for example, “I’m excited,” “a good relationship with my neighbour,” and “get you into the house”—and checking articles and collocations when proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “due to my prior work commitment” and the relative clause “where you can simply enter…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I am exciting” uses the wrong verb form, while “I gave them house keys” needs an article or possessive determiner. In “you can't feel alone,” the modal construction does not express the intended reassurance naturally; “you won’t feel alone” is appropriate. There are also errors in patterns such as “come at a station” and “returning to home.” Review verb forms, articles, and prepositions, then proofread each sentence for a complete and natural grammatical pattern.
