IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rani,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to discuss the arrangements which I made for you.
Firstly, I am vey glad that you are visting my place but due to my work I will be not at home until 7:00 PM. I will put the front gate keys in the post box, thats located behind the main door. So, you will be able to unlock the door. Secondlly, my home is 5 KM away from my house. So you need to walk for five minutes and then you can take the bus from the bus station near the Tim Hortons and that bus leaves you at the front of my house.
Furthermore, I will be at home around 7:30 PM. Then at 8:30 PM we will go together in the food restaurant for the dinner. After dinner, we will sit together in the park for the gossip.
See you soon.
Yours,
Yadwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter covers all three required points: you explain where the keys will be, give a route from the station, and say when you expect to be home and what you could do together. The practical details, such as taking a bus near Tim Hortons and going for dinner, make the response relevant. However, some information is unclear or insufficiently developed. “My home is 5 KM away from my house” does not tell Rani how far the station is from your home, and the key arrangement is confusing because the keys are said to be in the post box “behind the main door.” The evening plan is also quite general. Clarify the location of the keys and give a more precise route to make the arrangements fully usable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: greeting and purpose, practical arrangements, evening plans, and a closing. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Then” help the reader follow the main points. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, with “Secondlly” introducing the route and “Furthermore” moving to the evening without much connection between ideas. The first paragraph also combines the key instructions and travel directions, making the practical information harder to scan. Use separate paragraphs for access, directions, and evening plans, and connect steps in the route with clear sequencing language. This would make the organisation more natural and the references easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the main arrangements, including “front gate keys,” “bus station,” and “food restaurant.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “unlock” and “arrangements.” However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision and naturalness: “gossip” is not an appropriate way to describe a relaxed conversation with a relative, and “food restaurant” is an awkward collocation. “Vey,” “visting,” and “Secondlly” are misspelled, while “KM” would be more naturally written as “kilometres” in a letter. Choose familiar but accurate expressions, and proofread spelling and collocations so the reader can understand the details without distraction.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts to link clauses, for example, “I am vey glad that you are visting my place but due to my work I will be not at home until 7:00 PM.” The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In that sentence, the natural word order is “I will not be at home”; “I will be at home around 7:30 PM” also conflicts with the earlier statement that you will not be home until 7:00, so make the timing precise. The sentence about the keys uses “thats” without an apostrophe, and “we will go together in the food restaurant” has an incorrect preposition pattern. Practise accurate future forms and prepositions, and punctuate longer sentences carefully.
